Facilities Controls & Automation Engineer

Location: Austin, TX

Flex is seeking a Facilities Controls & Automation Lead to own the design, configuration, and maintenance of building automation systems across our facilities. This role is critical to keeping mission-critical infrastructure — HVAC, power distribution, and process systems — running reliably and efficiently.

What a typical day looks like:

  • Design, configure, and maintain Building Automation Systems (BAS) across facility infrastructure
  • Configure and support BACnet/Modbus networks integrating chillers, boilers, heat exchangers, AHUs, cooling towers, CRAHs, compressed air systems, and power distribution equipment
  • Program and maintain VFDs for mechanical and electrical systems
  • Lead facility controls projects from design through commissioning, including sequence-of-operations development
  • Lead the controls team on project execution, including scheduling, scope tracking, and coordination across stakeholders
  • Order and manage procurement of parts, materials, and equipment needed for controls projects and maintenance work
  • Identify problems, perform root cause analysis, and implement corrective actions on control system and equipment issues
  • Collaborate with facilities, engineering, and operations teams to optimize system performance and energy efficiency
  • Diagnose and resolve control system issues to minimize downtime on critical infrastructure
  • Maintain documentation for control system architecture, points lists, and standard operating procedures
  • Support vendor coordination and contractor oversight for controls-related work

The experience we're looking to add to our team

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience)
  • 7+ years of experience in building automation systems and/or facilities controls
  • Hands-on experience with chillers, boilers, heat exchangers, AHUs, HVAC systems, and cooling towers
  • Working knowledge of BACnet and Modbus protocols
  • Experience with EcoStruxure Building Operation or comparable BAS platforms
  • Familiarity with critical facility systems: chilled water, CRAH units, compressed air, power distribution
  • Strong troubleshooting skills for mixed OT/IT control environments
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and mechanical drawings
  • Project management experience, including leading a team through project execution and coordinating parts/materials procurement
  • Demonstrated experience with root cause analysis and implementing corrective actions
  • Experience in a data center, manufacturing, or mission-critical facility environment
  • VFD configuration and tuning experience
