This full-service hospital provides a complete line of inpatient and outpatient medical and surgical services The Advanced Practice Provider (Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant) Nocturnist is responsible for delivering high-quality inpatient medical care during overnight hours in collaboration with supervising physicians and the hospital medicine team. The APP Nocturnist manages admissions, cross-coverage, urgent clinical issues, and coordination of care to ensure safe, efficient, and evidence-based treatment for hospitalized adult patients. Essential Responsibilities Perform comprehensive history and physical examinations for new admissions. Evaluate and manage acute changes in patient condition overnight. Provide cross-coverage for hospitalized patients, including responding to nursing concerns and critical laboratory or imaging results. Develop and implement diagnostic and treatment plans in collaboration with attending hospitalists. Order and interpret laboratory tests, imaging studies, and other diagnostic procedures. Document all encounters, admissions, progress notes, and discharge summaries in the electronic medical record. Participate in rapid response and code blue events as part of the inpatient care team. Communicate effectively with nursing staff, consultants, emergency department clinicians, and attending physicians. Coordinate transfers to higher levels of care, including the intensive care unit, when clinically indicated. Ensure compliance with hospital policies, regulatory standards, and clinical protocols. Participate in quality improvement, patient safety, and utilization management initiatives. Schedule and Coverage Primarily works overnight shifts (typically 7:00 PM to 7:00 AM). Provides coverage for inpatient medical and observation patients. May assist with admissions from the Emergency Department and direct admissions from outside providers. Qualifications Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant program. Current licensure as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant in the Massachusetts Current DEA registration and Massachusetts Controlled Substance Registration (if prescribing controlled substances). Board certification as an NP or PA. Current BLS and ACLS certification. Minimum of 1#3 years of hospital medicine, emergency medicine, or critical care experience preferred. Knowledge and Skills Strong clinical assessment and decision-making abilities. Ability to recognize and respond to urgent and emergent clinical situations. Excellent communication and teamwork skills. Proficiency with electronic medical records. Familiarity with evidence-based inpatient medicine practices. Reporting Relationship Reports to the Chief/Assistant Chief of Hospital Medicine and collaborates closely with attending physicians, nursing leadership, and ancillary departments.
