Role Overview

The Director of Tax Operations serves as the operational right hand to the VP of Tax Operations, owning day-to-day execution, manager enablement, and operational stability across our largest tax client program. This role supports approximately 6,000 tax professionals and managers and an $80M+ revenue portfolio. This is a senior, hands-on leadership role focused on execution, judgment, and scale.

Key Responsibilities

Operational Leadership & Execution

  • Own day-to-day execution of the tax operations program, ensuring stability, consistency, and performance across large seasonal populations
  • Act as primary escalation point for M3 managers, resolving operational issues before they reach the VP level
  • Maintain operational continuity during peak seasons and periods of rapid scale
  • Identify risks early and implement corrective actions to prevent downstream impact to clients, employees, or revenue

Manager Enablement & Oversight
  • Provide leadership, coaching, and guidance to M3 managers across the tax program
  • Drive consistent standards around performance management, escalation protocols, and operational decision-making
  • Support manager effectiveness in high-pressure, fast-moving environments
  • Reinforce accountability while maintaining engagement and retention

Data-Informed Decision Support
  • Partner with data analysts to translate operational data into actionable insights
  • Review and interpret dashboards, reports, and trends related to capacity, utilization, performance, attrition, and readiness
  • Prepare clear, executive-level summaries for the VP of Tax Operations and senior leadership
  • Ensure data supports decisions rather than creating noise or administrative burden

Cross-Functional Coordination
  • Partner closely with HR, Recruiting and Finance on people-related and operational matters
  • Support compliance, onboarding, performance, and risk management efforts tied to the tax workforce
  • Coordinate with internal teams to ensure operational alignment without creating co-employment risk or role confusion

Seasonal Readiness & Risk Management
  • Lead operational readiness for peak tax seasons, including staffing ramp-up, manager coverage, and issue resolution
  • Anticipate and mitigate risks related to scale, performance, compliance, and employee experience
  • Ensure operational processes can withstand volume surges without breaking

Qualifications

Required:
  • 5–7+ years of experience in operations leadership within high-volume, people-heavy environments
  • Demonstrated experience supporting or managing large, seasonal or variable workforces
  • Strong operational judgment with the ability to prioritize, escalate, and resolve issues under pressure
  • Experience working closely with senior leaders as a trusted operational partner
  • Proven ability to translate data into clear decisions and actions
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to align managers, analysts, and cross-functional partners

Preferred:
  • Experience in tax services, financial services, or regulated professional services environments
  • Prior experience supporting Fortune 500 client programs
  • Familiarity with remote or distributed workforce models
  • Comfort navigating compliance-sensitive environments
