Kamehameha Schools is hiring a Water Resource Engineer that will be responsible for the strategic planning, design, engineering, and project management of water resource infrastructure and systems across ʻĀina Pauahi. The ideal candidate will be culturally grounded, connected to community, and motivated to find innovative solutions that honor and incorporate indigenous practices. The Water Resource Engineer will also lead the design, implementation, and installation of technology for water and environmental resources monitoring, data collection, research, and education.
Familiarity with natural and cultural resources, landscapes, and stewardship efforts in Hawai‘i, familiarity with Hawaiian geography, cultural practices and the Hawaiian language, and working knowledge of ArcGIS preferred.
This hybrid position provides work from home flexibility on an approval basis. As a statewide organization, there is opportunity for the this position to be primarily located on the islands of O‘ahu, Maui, and Hawai‘i.
Job Summary
The Water Resource Engineer will be responsible for the strategic planning, design, engineering, and project management of water resource infrastructure and systems across ʻĀina Pauahi. This role requires a holistic "one water" perspective, integrating traditional ecological knowledge and Native Hawaiian worldview into modern water management practices. The ideal candidate will be culturally grounded, connected, and motivated to find innovative solutions that honor and incorporate indigenous practices. This role involves creating engineering documents, obtaining necessary permits, and managing external stakeholders to implement water resource capital projects and related operational systems. The Water Resource Engineer will also lead the design, implementation, and installation of technology for water and environmental resources monitoring, data collection, research, and education.
Essential Responsibilities
Strategy & Planning
Conduct or oversee groundwater and surface water studies, including stream flow assessments, water quality sampling, and system efficiency evaluations.
Use monitoring data to improve resource management, aligning with the organization's values and outcomes.
Develop and manage water resource-related policies and procedures.
Lead short- and long-range capital improvement projects related to ʻĀina Pauahi water resources.
Leads strategy and planning for water resource engineering and proactively communicates impacts to water system operations with key stakeholders.
Engineering & Design
Manage the engineering, design, and construction of water systems, working with internal and external stakeholders to meet project objectives and timelines.
Create drawings and specifications to optimize the return on new and rehabilitated infrastructure.
Design and implement electronic systems for water resource monitoring and management for regulatory compliance, research, and education.
Leads water resource engineering and design, and proactively communicates impacts to water system operations with key stakeholders.
Stakeholder Engagement & Resource Optimization
Lead water and environmental system projects, providing technical consultation, planning initiatives, feasibility studies, and assessments of facilities and real property.
Develop and implement communication strategies with user groups, consultants, and senior management to ensure alignment with project goals.
Establish and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including FDSD, vendors, and community groups, to optimize resource use and achieve common goals.
Manage project budgets, provide regular reporting, and ensure compliance with governmental and regulatory standards.
Support long-range water resource planning and cross-train to manage the organization's plans effectively.
Risk Management
Manage risks inherent in development, design, and construction processes for water resource projects and infrastructure.
Ensure project solutions align with goals and achieve supportable program or business cases.
Ensure compliance with governmental and regulatory standards and industry best practices.
Minimum Qualifications
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered in lieu of the below.
Bachelor's Degree in Environmental/Civil/Mechanical/Electrical Engineering, Hydrology, Geology, or related field.
Minimum 5 years of experience in water resource systems planning, design, and implementation.
Strong analytical, computational, and engineering skills.
Ability to navigate regulatory and governmental agencies for permitting work.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
Basic understanding of Hawai'i water history, laws, and regulatory environment
Preferred Qualifications
Master's Degree in a related field.
Professional Engineer's license or equivalent experience in water resource management.
Experience with ArcGIS, AutoCAD, SCADA, and electronic monitoring systems.
Knowledge of Hawaiian water resource management and relevant cultural practices (i.e., ahupua‘a land tenure, ‘auwai systems).
Physical Requirements
Ability to work outdoors in physically demanding conditions.
Frequently sit, perform desk-based computer tasks, and grasp light/fine manipulation.
Occasionally stand, walk, and lift/carry objects up to 20 pounds.
Working Conditions
This position involves traveling to various locations, including neighbor islands.
Work is conducted in both office and non-standard environments.
Evening and weekend hours may be required to meet goals and objectives.
