Metallurgist (Cleveland, Ohio)
Client that is the WORLD LEADER in Weld Technologies is hiring a Metallurgist to replace retiree. Working knowledge of steel (wire rod and flat) quality and cost essential. For over 100 years client has produced the world's most reliable arc welding products, automated joining assembly and cutting systems, and also brazing and soldering alloys respected internationally. JOB DESCRIPTION (DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES):
Reports directly to the General Manager in charge of welding wire drawing operations.
Create and carry out development plans with suppliers for knowledge building and understanding of how the processing and creation of steel and alloys affects drawing production quality and efficiency
Build and maintain relationships with steel mills worldwide.
Perform capability reviews of suppliers for determination of process and quality capabilities.
Work with suppliers on continuous improvement.
Create technical plan for new supplier development programs.
Monitor steel supplier production schedules.
Develop trial plans for first time supply of new grades from exiting suppliers and/or first- time supply from new suppliers.
Work with suppliers and internal team to track and collect data for determination of meeting quality and production standards and expectations.
Support internal teams with metallurgical consulting and assistance.
Work with subsidiaries to develop steel suppliers.
Travel both domestically and internationally to serve as Subject Matter Expert at both installs and diagnosing failures (Prior international experienced preferred. Travel expectation, 30% - 40%.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Technical specialist capable of problem solving; Steel making, Steel processing, and Wire Drawing.
Understand processing and production of carbon, alloy and stainless alloys purchased, primarily wire rod and cold rolled flat products.
BS Degree in Metallurgy, Material Science with a focus in Metallurgy, related field or equivalent experience 3-5 years of steel mill experience, melt and rolling preferred.
Familiar with steel mill operations including melting continuous casting, hot rolling, cold rolling, and drawing of wire rod or production of cold rolled annealed and tempered flat steel.
Working knowledge of steel, wire rod and flat quality and cost.
Experience with steel supplier coordination, selection, and monitoring experience with chemical and mechanical properties related to steel quality, design, and deep drawing.
Familiar with drawing dies and lubrication for drawing wire rod to wire on multi-hole drawing equipment.
Ability to work in various work settings, languages, and cultures. Foreign language is a plus.
Must have the ability to build and maintain industry relationships.
Proficient with Microsoft Windows, Excel, Access, Word, and PowerPoint. Experience with Minitab and SAP desired.
