About the Job

Practice at the top of your license in either the CVICU or SICU alongside experienced intensivists, surgeons, and multidisciplinary specialty teams at MedStar Washington Hospital Center.

 

MedStar Health is seeking experienced Physician Assistants (PAs) and Acute Care Nurse Practitioners (ACNPs) to join the Critical Care APP team in either the CVICU or SICU at one of the Mid-Atlantic's premier academic tertiary and quaternary referral centers in Washington, D.C..

 

MedStar Washington Hospital Center is a 900+ bed teaching hospital and major referral center for high-acuity patients throughout the region. Our institution is nationally recognized as a Level I Trauma Center, Comprehensive Stroke Center, top 5% cardiac surgery program in the country, and regional ECMO referral center.

Cardiovascular ICU (CVICU)

The CVICU service spans three specialized ICUs with a combined 40-bed footprint. APPs manage patients recovering from cardiac surgery, advanced heart failure requiring mechanical circulatory support, ECMO, vascular surgery, and medically complex cardiovascular critical illness.

Surgical ICU (SICU)

The SICU service spans four specialized ICUs with a combined 48-bed footprint caring for trauma, neurocritical care, burn, and general surgery patients within a Level I Trauma Center and Comprehensive Stroke Center.

Position Highlights

13-hour rotating day/night shifts

  • Perform comprehensive history and physical examinations
  • Diagnose and manage critically ill patients using laboratory, hemodynamic, and imaging data
  • Manage respiratory failure, shock, heart failure, renal failure, acid-base disturbances, and post-operative complications
  • Present patients during multidisciplinary ICU rounds
  • Perform advanced bedside procedures including:
    • Central venous and arterial catheter placement
    • Non-tunneled dialysis catheter insertion
    • Chest tube placement
    • Thoracentesis
  • Collaborate closely with intensivists, surgeons, consultants, and multidisciplinary care teams
  • Facilitate safe transitions of care between shifts and services
  • Educate and mentor APPs and students
Qualifications
  • Graduate of an accredited PA or Acute Care NP program
  • NCCPA or AGACNP certification
  • Current BLS and ACLS certifications
  • Critical care or inpatient hospital medicine experience preferred
  • Advanced procedural experience preferred
