About the Job

General Summary of Position
Provides patient care to an assigned group of patients according to an established plan of care under the direction and supervision of a nurse.  These functions are performed in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations and MedStar Georgetown University Hospital's philosophy policies procedures and standards.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities


  • Implements patients' plan of care as directed by the nurse reporting information and findings to the nurse and offering suggestions for revision of the plan of care as appropriate
  • Provides direct bedside care to patients as assigned inclusive of but not limited to: performs the activities of daily living assisting with ambulation assistance with crutches and walkers and transporting of patients in wheelchairs and stretchers
  • Performs routine sterile and non-sterile treatments and other treatments identified by Unit/Hospital policy inclusive of but not limited to: ostomy care; Foley Catheter care; peripheral  IV insertion/care; venipuncture; EKG; simple dressing changes and wound care; maintenance of drainage tubes with/without pump or suction; point of care testing; care of oxygen equipment and suction
  • Participates in patient/family teaching as directed
  • Reports/records/documents information in designated areas of the medical record or via computerized systems according to established guidelines
  • Maintains a safe and orderly patient/unit environment including but not limited to disinfecting patient care equipment and organizing patient and procedural rooms
  • Supports and contributes to the unit department and organizational goals inclusive of the mission vision and values
  • Assists with unit and hospital quality and performance improvement activities
  • Operates the unit's communication systems (e.g. patient call system paging system telephone etc.) responding to requests appropriately
  • Assumes other duties and responsibilities that are appropriate to the position and area.  The above responsibilities are a general description of the level and nature of the work assigned to this classification and is not to be considered as all-inclusive
  • Minimal Qualifications
    Education
    • High School Diploma or GED required
    • Successful completion of Certified Nursing Assistant Program (CNA) required
    Experience
    • One-year experience as a certified nursing assistant or related health care experience in an acute care setting preferred
    Licenses and Certifications
    • CNA - Certified Nursing Assistant in the District of Columbia preferred
    • CPR - Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation (includes BLS and NRP) for healthcare providers from either the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross within 90 Days required
    • Additional unit/specialty certifications may vary by department or business unit.

    • Ability to perform direct patient care technologies;
    • effective verbal electronic and written communication skills;
    • Good interpersonal skills;
    • Ability to set priorities and work in a stressful environment.

    This position has a hiring range of

    USD $18.00 - USD $29.74 /Hr.
