General Summary of Position

Are you an experienced nurse looking for an opportunity to formally lead? The Assistant Nursing Director role is a great position that allows you to remain close to the bedside but allows you to serve as a front-line nurse leader. MedStar Health is seeking a dedicated and engaged Assistant Nursing Director to help lead the Burn/Trauma ICU team. As a member of our Division of Nursing's (DON) leadership/management team, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of patient care in this specialized field.

Position Overview

In collaboration with the Nursing Director the Assistant Nursing Director is responsible for the leadership and management of the Burn/Trauma ICU at MedStar Washington Hospital Center. The Assistant Nursing Director fosters associate's commitment to improving quality, safety, and cost-conscious patient care outcomes. This role offers the chance to direct and coordinate the nursing and patient care delivery of the unit-based professional and support personnel. As a nursing leader, you will promote an environment that aligns with the Division of Nursing and MedStar Health's mission, vision, and values.

Unit Highlights

Nurses on Unit 4H have specialized training in the care and treatment of critically ill burn and trauma patients. They care of patients with a variety of life-threatening injuries including large total body surface area burns, inhalation injuries, gun shot and stab wounds, and motor vehicle accidents. Nurses also have the opportunity to care for patients who have undergone complex surgical procedures. They are well-known for their teamwork and foster an environment where you will be supported by your nursing practice.

Our critical care program is an integrated, multidisciplinary system of care for patients with complex medical conditions. Care is coordinated and directed in a patient-centered model by a specially trained, multidisciplinary team consisting of physicians, APCs, nurses, and therapists who provide sophisticated evaluation and management of patients and astute utilization of sophisticated technologies. We offer an advanced level of care that is unparalleled in the metropolitan area.

Key Responsibilities

·       In collaboration with the Nurse Director, develops department goals, objectives and ensures compliance with hospital policy and procedure, clinical practice, guidelines, and regulatory and accreditation standards. 

·       Provides shift-based clinical leadership through role modeling professional practice behaviors, proper delegation of activities, and management of the nursing team and promotes unit activities that enhance department satisfaction an engagement.

·       Collaborate with the nursing leadership team, Medical Staff, and leaders of other departments/disciplines to ensure seamless patient care.

·       Participates in patient rounding to review patient status and connect with patient and family. 

·       Collaborates with the Nursing Director in the hiring, evaluation, promotion, and termination of personnel within the department as needed and initiates coaching and counseling of associates. 

·       Maintains clinical knowledge and skills and engages in the provision of direct care for a caseload of patients as required. 

·       Assumes administrative responsibilities in absence of the director and as needed provides coverage for other colleagues.

Qualifications

·         Bachelor's degree in nursing (Master's preferred)

·         DC RN License

·         Approximately three to four years of progressively more responsible job-related experience

·         Strong interpersonal and communication skills
