Description

Assists physician and/or nurse during endoscopy procedures. Is responsible for maintaining endoscopes and accessories, and maintaining the general cleanliness of the entire unit.
Education

  • High School Diploma or GED required or
  • equivalent; required and
  • knowledge of GI anatomy. required
Experience
  • GI technician experience preferred
Licenses and Certifications
  • CNA (Certified Nursing Assistant) certification by the Maryland Board of Nursing. required and
  • CPR certification. required
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Verbal and written communication skills.
  • Assists clinical nurse with patient preparation including monitor placement, positioning, and emotional support. Maintains patient confidentiality and privacy at all times. Provides for patient comfort and skin integrity as needed.
  • Assists nurse with orientation of new staff members. Completes daily evaluations in cooperation with nurse preceptor.
  • Assists physician during Colonoscopy/Polypectomy procedures: Position patient left lateral. Abdominal support as needed to assist scope progression. Applying grounding pad and attaching power cord to snare under supervision of nursing staff or physician. Colon decompression: assists with placement of guide wire and decompression tube. Assembling equipment for tattooing of colonic lesions. Tissue biopsies with proper labeling of specimens. Cauterization of AVMs: equipment required and generator usage.
  • Assists physician during EGD/PEG procedures:. Positions patient's head during procedure. Inserts bite block. Snaring of guide wires during PEG. Maintains knowledge of biopsy technique. Under supervision of nursing staff or physician, provides placement of grounding pad and demonstrates knowledge of generator function. Assists with Sclerotherapy by properly handling sclerosing agent and adhering to prescribed safety precautions. Assembles Esophageal Banding equipment and assists with esophageal dilatation techniques (Maloney, Savory, Balloon). Polypectomy: uses snare and cautery. Cauterization of gastric bleeding: proper grounding and use of generator.
  • Assists physician during ERCP procedures: Demonstrates understanding of multiple pieces of equipment specific to diagnostic findings. Assists physician during procedures, i.e. injecting contrast dye, advancing guide wires, prepping patient for cautery, and manipulation of cut wire. Anticipates physician need and secures necessary equipment specific to task i.e. stone removal balloons; dilation balloon, cannulas, sphincterotomes, stents, stone retrieval basket/lithotripter.
  • Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.
  • Demonstrates proper handling of tissue samples and proficiency in obtaining, labeling and documenting each sample properly.
  • Enters patient data (name, social security number, DOB, procedure, date, time, physician) into GI-specific computer program. Maintains knowledge of computer shut down and future patient date procedures. Troubleshoots data errors.
  • Independently prepares room for specific procedures as per schedule. This includes basic setup and specific equipment needed, such as proper scope and proper instruments and/or physician preference. Responsible for timely room turnover post procedure.
  • Maintains cleanliness of washroom and restocks procedures. Under the direction of the charge nurse or designee, inventories stock and maintains par levels of supplies.
  • Maintains knowledge of GI anatomy and precautions needed during insertion and advancement of scopes. Assists during emergencies such as cardiac arrest, respiratory arrest and bleeding.
  • Participates in multidisciplinary quality and service improvement teams. Attends unit in-services. Successfully completes required annual education programs, mandatory competencies, CPR, etc. Participates in meetings and on committees and represents the department and hospital in community outreach efforts.
  • Responsible for the care and simple maintenance of endoscopes. Demonstrates proper handling of scopes and cleaning of scopes and channels. Performs leakage testing as determined by unit protocol. Loads scopes and operates automatic scope washer as per operations manual. Adheres to unit documentation of scope number, wash load number, leakage test results and chemical testing.
