General Summary of Position
Delivers, assembles, adjusts, maintains and stores orthopedic equipment, soft goods and other related clinical support equipment.


Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Delivers various types of orthopedic equipment, soft goods and other clinical support equipment to patient care areas.
  • Conducts assigned daily rounds to verify usage and proper functioning of orthopedic support equipment.
  • Verifies charges for equipment used and services rendered through kardex and computer confirmation.
  • Assists physicians in the performance of orthopedic procedures in the cast rooms, Operating and Emergency Room, MedSTAR and nursing units, including splinting, cast bracing/application, removal and wedging.
  • Assists the nursing staff with the placement and operation of various orthopedic soft goods, i.e. collars, braces, slings, sacro-lumbar supports, etc.
  • Sets-up various types of orthopedic traction, as per physician's orders, e.g. bucks, pelvic, cervical, arm and burn traction, etc.
  • Instructs patient regarding simple exercises, cast care, and use of crutches.
  • Cleans equipment and devices according to department standards and specifications.
  • Assists with periodic inventory inspections and advises Lead Orthopedic Technician or management of stock level shortages.
  • May assist with the orientation and training of new employees, as required.

    Minimum Qualifications
    Education

    • High School Diploma or GED required
    • May require up to l year of technical or other specialized training.

    Experience

    • 6 to 12 months experience such as an Orthopedic Technician or Equipment Assistant required

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    • Requires the ability to read and write; and knowledge of grammar, and arithmetic including fractions and decimals.
    • May require the use of standard office/medical equipment (i.e., typewriter, personal computer, data terminal, on-line printer, calculator, telephone, facsimile, copier, sterilizing equipment, blood pressure cuff, or tables); the preparation, comparison or checking of reports, records and related data; and basic use of formulas, charts, tables, drawings and knowledge of their application.
