Job Summary: 
 

As the Vice President of Support Services for MedStar Georgetown University Hospital (MGUH), the incumbent in this position will provide leadership consistent with the mission, vision, values, policies, and objectives for the organization. Responsible for the daily operations of environmental health and safety, clinical engineering, supply chain, radiation safety, design and construction, nutrition services, protective services, parking, telecommunications/operators, mail room, gift shop, environmental services, laser safety, contract management, child life, volunteer services, emergency preparedness, facilities management and other departments as assigned by the COO. These functions are performed in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations and MGUH's philosophy, policies, procedures, and standards. 

 

Primary Duties: 

  1. Drives change and catalyzes innovation to achieve a high level of organizational performance within the strategic platforms of Market Leadership, Highest Quality and Safety, Best Patient Experience/Patient Centered Care, Best Place to Work and Financial Strength. 

  1. Nurtures talent by providing leadership, mentoring and coaching that encourages all direct reports to function independently and creates opportunities for development and advancement. Drives a high level of associate and physician engagement. 

  1. Working with Senior Management, develops and manages annual operating and capital budgets for the division. 

  1. Administers and maintains all department services in accordance with standards and criteria established by JCAHO, state, local, and federal agencies to ensure compliance with those external requirements. 

  1. Serves patients by exemplifying and driving the organization toward patient experience excellence through a patient centered, patient first culture; holds departmental staff accountable for adopting and demonstrating those standards. 

  1. Engages with the community and represents the Hospital and System's mission and values. 

  1. Provides the long range strategic plan for assigned departments and services by way of analysis, forecasting trends, anticipating organizational changes, and recommending alternative strategies to ensure state-of-the-art operation. 

  1. Administers, directs, monitors, and coordinates the activities of assigned departments and areas. 

  1. Acts as liaison for the Hospital in various local, regional, and national professional organizations and committees to improve health services. 

  1. Remains current in theory and practice of hospital management and serves as a role model for Hospital staff. 

  1. Performs personnel management functions for the designated area to include, but not limited to: interviewing, hiring, scheduling, coaching, counseling, evaluating and terminating employees as delegated by COO approval. 

  1. Directs fiscal planning and oversight of responsible Departments under the direction of the COO. Reviews and approves revenue, staffing, operating, and capital budgets and ensures that fiscal targets are realized. Analyzes and reports on budget variances, assists departments in the development of corrective action plans to ensure unfavorable variances are improved, and monitors and tracks oversight activity to ensure department execution and compliance with corrective action plans. 

  1. Plans, provides, and evaluates orientation, training, continuing education programs or other opportunities for learning as delegated for the department and other hospital staff. 

  1. Assumes other duties and responsibilities appropriate to the position and area. The above responsibilities are a general description of the level and nature of the work assigned to this classification and is not to be considered all inclusive 

 

Qualifications: 

  • Master's degree in Hospital or Health Services Administration, Public Health, or Business Administration required 

  • 8-10 years in a senior leadership role required 

  • Extensive knowledge in the areas of hospital administration, areas of responsibility, alternate delivery systems, and local and national health care issues. Comprehensive knowledge of current personnel and financial management. 

  • Ability to conceptualize and effectively work and coordinate multiple systems within an organization. 

  • High tolerance for stress. 

  • Ability to analyze facts and to exercise sound judgment in decision making.
