Facility Systems Technician - Mercy Hospital Logan County

Full-time, 40 hours per week

Day shift

This is an entry-level position requiring basic knowledge of boiler, HVAC, refrigeration, control system maintenance and operation, plumbing, electricity, carpentry, and painting. It is recommended that incumbents attend one or two years of trade school to prepare them for advancement opportunities. This position will also provide an opportunity to learn proper use of basic tools and equipment necessary to maintain and troubleshoot HVAC and refrigeration systems. This position may support small and mid-size hospitals, critical access hospitals, small inpatient/outpatient facilities, and clinics. The Facility Systems Technician provides the necessary skill to operate, maintain, and repair various electrical/plumbing systems, movable equipment, physical plant equipment, furniture, walls, ceilings, and floors.

- Develops skill set to operate, troubleshoots, repair, and maintain electrical equipment and devices including: blanket warmers, kitchen equipment, secondary electrical distribution systems, breaker panels, UPS, cameras, access control, OR lighting, OR tables, lighting, wiring devices, timers, parking lights, illuminated signs, battery lights, illuminated exit signs, TVs and systems, and hospital beds with some supervision.
- Develops skill set to operate, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain the plumbing system including sinks, faucets, toilets, drain systems, eyewash stations, safety showers, kitchen equipment, valves, showers, irrigation system, dish machine, garbage disposals, and backflow devices with some supervision.
- Develops skill set to operate, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain moveable equipment such as beds, stretchers, and wheelchairs with some supervision.
- Develops skill set to repair and maintain medical gas delivery systems such as outlets, zone valves, flexible connectors, manifolds, and bulk storage systems with some supervision.
- Develops skill set to repair and maintain wet/dry fire sprinkler systems, gaseous fire extinguishing systems, and fire extinguishers with some supervision.
- Develops skill set to maintain, repair, and replace wall finishes such as drywall, paint, wall coverings, and cove base with some supervision.
- Maintains and installs interior architectural signage.
- Develops skill set to cut keys, rekey lock sets, and maintain database for key distribution with some supervision.
- Develops skill set to operate, troubleshoot, repair and maintain electrical and mechanical components of physical plant including boilers, chillers, HVAC systems, AHUs, exhaust systems, diesel fuel delivery systems, air balancing, safety exhaust hoods, elevators, refrigeration equipment, generators, transfer switches, primary electrical distribution systems, temperature controls, pumps, heat exchangers, steam distribution systems, motor control centers, medical gas source equipment, and air- compressors with some supervision.

Minimum Required Qualifications:

  • Education: None
  • Licensure: Valid Driver's License for all Mercy locations. Mercy OKC Hospital requires Class II Boiler Operator's License administered by Oklahoma City where boilers are installed. Incumbents must have required license prior to advancing to Facility Systems Technician II, when applicable. Class C Tank Operator Training and Certification required for all Mercy locations. Must achieve certification within 90 days of employment. Fire door maintenance training program with certificate of completion. Incumbents must have training prior to advancing to Facility Systems Technician II. UL fire stop training with certificate of completion. Incumbents must have training prior to advancing to Facility Systems Technician II.
  • Experience: This is an entry-level position with a preference of 1 or more years commercial experience working with any of the following equipment: HVAC, boilers, and refrigeration equipment.
  • Other Skills and Knowledge: Requires oral and written communication skills to communicate with customers and follow instructions. Verbal ability required to read and understand technical manuals. Numerical ability required to make calculations for testing, installation, measurement, estimation and repair of equipment. Ability to prioritize work assignments, conceptualize and formulate finished product. Form perception is required when measuring and installing parts and equipment. Spatial ability required to understand forms and relationships when working from blueprints or specifications. Requires knowledge and use of various computer software such as Outlook, TMS and/or Nuvolo. Ability to manage time and materials efficiently. Completes work assignments in a high-quality manner and the lowest cost to Mercy. Requires exceptional customer service skills and ability to achieve department goals. Incumbent must achieve favorable results on both oral and written competency exam prior to advancing to Facility Systems Technician II. Requires general manual dexterity, basic math knowledge, and mechanical aptitude. Exposure to extreme temperatures, electric shock, and loud noise.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent preferred. 2 or more years of training in a Technical or Vocational School.
  • Licensure: Boiler, HVAC, or Refrigeration. Electrical and/or Plumbing.
  • Experience: 1 or more years working as a maintenance technician in a healthcare, educational, or industrial setting.
  • Certification/Registration: EPA approved Universal Certification for handling Refrigerants
