Overview:

 

The Media Relations and Communications Manager implements news and communications strategies and executes tactics to grow Mercy's reputation and awareness, avert and minimize negative news within a designated community and across Mercy, and manage internal communications within the assigned community, in alignment with local and Mercy-wide strategies and needs. The manager supports and provides critical recommendations for news, social media and internal communications related to regional and Mercy-wide marketing plans and integrated campaigns that drive patient acquisition and retention. This position reports to the Executive Director of Media Relations and Social Media and has shared accountabilities to the Executive Director of Internal Communications.

Externally, this role provides leadership and support in maximizing earned media for Mercy in both traditional news and all relevant social media platforms, and tracking the benefits of these efforts to drive business to Mercy. This person takes an active lead in setting the standards for the news team, serves as an advisor and support to news team members across Mercy and manages special news projects.

Internally, this role provides leadership for communications strategy and tactics within the designated community, in alignment with Mercy-wide communication strategies. The manager helps to create and influence Mercy's culture and support our business objectives through consistent messages and a distinctive Mercy voice directed to co-workers, physicians, board members and other stakeholders.

This position will work closely with Integrated Marketing and local operational leadership to ensure coordination and prioritization of news and internal communications efforts locally, and to ensure an appropriate level of support across Mercy when needed. This person will be a visible and active representative of Mercy in the local community, and will perform all duties and responsibilities in a manner consistent with the mission and values of Mercy.


Qualifications:

  • Education Requirements: Bachelors degree in journalism, public relations, communications, English, marketing or similar area of study
  • Experience Requirements:
    • Demonstrated track record for success

High-Level Job Requirements:

  • Plans, leads and implements external and internal communications directed at multiple audiences, including patients/customers, community members, co-workers, physicians, leaders, board members, news media and others
  • Aligns and collaborates with media relations/social media and internal communications team members across Mercy to develop and implement communications strategies to support marketing campaigns and goals, and to advance awareness, understanding and engagement in Mercy's mission, culture and business objectives, both locally and Mercy-wide
  • Builds strong and effective relationships with media, locally and regionally, as well as globally when needed 
  • Builds strong and effective relationships with Mercy leaders and serves as lead communications counsel/advisor locally, as well as regionally and Mercy-wide as required
  • Oversees work, provides direction and mentors local internal communications specialist, ensuring quality and effectiveness of work and alignment with Mercy-wide communications strategies and goals
  • Supports news/social media and internal communications goals, objectives and tactics which are measurable and repeatable
  • Assists in developing a master plan and strategy for Mercy-wide stories, as well as regional stories, in order to align efforts and drive business to Mercy
  • Possesses strong storytelling skills, both long and short form (telling a story through a news release or a more succinct social media post)

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Supports and mentors news/communications team members including proofing, editing, recommending best practices and providing critical input for opportunities and risks across Mercy 
  • Provides speaker/media training support and speech writing to help prepare spokespersons to support internal and community presentations, meetings, news stories and response to media inquiries
  • Supports crisis communications activities, including helping to develop plans, recommend responses, provide counsel and prepare and train spokespersons as needed
  • Participates in setting Mercy's news strategy and takes an active lead in Mercy's strategy team meetings that meet virtually every week and face-to-face periodically to brainstorm and create detailed news plans for key Mercy-wide initiatives
  • Assists in developing traditional media and social media training for news team, Integrated Marketing co-workers and leaders across Mercy in order to safeguard the Mercy brand
  • Provides input into news/communications tools, services, systems and contracts to provide the highest level of support to the team 
  • Collaborates in updating and developing news, social media and communications protocol, training, plans, policies, best practices, procedures and processes
  • Assists in developing and fine-tuning methods to measure averted or minimized negative news stories to Mercy's brand
  • Assists news/communications team and other departments and services within Mercy in managing customer service issues and minimizing public relations risks
  • Maximizes and repurposes stories across all possible channels, including external and internal (for example, multiple social media platforms, mercy.net newsroom and internal avenues such as intranet and newsletters)
  • Collaborates with marketing and communications team members to address local and Mercy-wide news objectives
  • Possesses exceptional judgment and ability to synthesize issues quickly and respond appropriately, along with a keen sense of knowing who to include in discussions 
  • Monitors daily news coverage in local communities and plays an active role in monitoring national stories that might influence health care related news in local, regional and Mercy-wide communities
