Overview:

 

Assists the physician and office staff with selected duties to include clerical processing, patient preparation, scheduling, lab, x-ray and medical records. As directed, performs patient care activities consistent with the established standards of nursing practice. The incumbent in this position shall carry out his or her responsibilities and integrate into his or her work ethic the Mercy Philosophy of caring for the sick and suffering, respect for human life and the dignity of each person, applying Christian values to all crucial human issues in the area over which he or she has responsibility. In communicating with patients, families, visitors and employees, a caring, friendly, personal and professional approach is expected. Performs related duties as assigned. Qualifications:

  • Education: High School Diploma or GED. Knowledge of medical practice, care, examination, diagnostic and treatment room procedures. Knowledge of medical equipment, instruments and safety procedures. Knowledge of medical office procedures.
  • Experience: Must have computer experience and good communication skills.Certifications: CPR certification within 3 months of hire date.
  • Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities: Skill in assisting in a variety of treatments, medications, taking vital signs, maintaining records, recording test results and office procedures. Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations. Must be able to interpret, adapt and apply guidelines and policies. Must be able to communicate clearly and establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, staff and the public. Must be able to operate multi-line phone, fax and computer.Preferred One year medical office experience Medical Assistant Certification (AAMA, AMT, AMCA or NCCT)

 

Expert Assistance to the Nurse/Provider: Uses the appropriate policy, protocols, standards of practice within the scope of practice. Escorts the patient from the reception area to the exam room, communicates with patient to determine reason for visit and chief complaint/symptoms and documents same. Obtains appropriate vital signs (B/P, temp, pulse, respiration, Wt. & Ht). Obtains length, weight, & head circumference on all pediatric patients and records on growth chart. Verifies immunization status on all pediatric patients. Verifies tetanus status on all patients presenting with injury or break in skin integrity. Verifies and/or updates patients problem and medication list and asks patient if he/she needs any refills. Verifies allergies at every visit and updates the chart as needed. May pull samples at provider direction for them to dispense and logs samples in chart and sample log. Recognizes limitations and seeks additional assistance if necessary.Support: Performs appropriate screening tests before provider sees the patient, i.e. visual acuity on patient with eye injury; O2 Sat on patients with respiratory or cardiac complaints, UA on patient with urinary complaints, etc., and verifies that all test results are on the chart before provider sees the patient, i.e., lab, x-ray, consults, etc. Prepares the patient for exam. i.e., pap smear, breast exam, wound monitoring, etc. along with items needed to complete the exam. Administers injections as ordered, performs breathing treatments, EKGs, PFTs, and ear wash as ordered, performs dressing changes, suture removal and simple wound care as ordered by the provider. Assists the provider with procedures and obtains appropriate consents to include ABNs if indicated.Expert Care: Obtains, verifies and implements provider orders and nursing interventions within the scope of practice. Documents the patient's response to procedures, therapies, medications and interventions. Demonstrates or develops proficiency in performing and/or assisting in procedures and therapies according to policy and procedures.Documentation: Ensures that the patient record reflects the plan of care, patient care delivered and the status during his or her care and discharge. Presents accurate, detailed phone information per defined protocols to include patient name, telephone number, provider name, date & time of call, name of person calling and their relationship to patient, clearly defined patient need, list of allergies, pharmacy name and phone number, etc. Pulls chart, attaches message and gives to provider. Urgent messages are handled immediately. Non-emergent messages are handled per provider protocol. Ensures that the information is legible, concise, accurate, objective and timely, while meeting organizational standards.Leadership: Participates in the PI process and identifies opportunities to improve patient care delivery, including collecting data, monitoring and implementing changes. Enhances the learning opportunities of other staff and effectively contributes to the orientation of team members.Patient Education: Obtains education documents as approved by the provider and giving to patient, parent, or family member. Documents in medical record all education provided. Communicates with patient regarding instructions from the provider and documents that communication. Communicates effectively with patient/family member test preparation requirements, medication changes, etc.
