Primary Care – Lead Medical Assistant

Job Summary

Under the direction of the Primary Care Operations team, the Primary Care Patient Care Lead Medical Assistant works closely with Mercy Primary Care Providers to support the delivery of safe, timely, effective, efficient, equitable, and patient‑centered care. This role partners with patients, providers, and the multidisciplinary care team to drive quality outcomes and support clinic operations. All responsibilities are performed in alignment with Mercy's mission, values, and Service Standards.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Leads or actively participates in daily clinic huddles to support workflow, communication, and patient care goals.
  • Identifies operational or clinical issues and recommends effective solutions to leadership.
  • Assists with staff scheduling as directed by the Practice Manager, as applicable.
  • Coordinates PTO requests and manages call‑outs to ensure adequate clinic coverage, as applicable.
  • Serves as a patient liaison, communicating concerns and feedback to leadership as appropriate.
  • Fosters a positive, collaborative, and supportive team environment.
  • Assists with EHR training and reinforces best practices related to system use and documentation.
  • May initiate, support, or lead department‑wide strategic or operational initiatives.
  • Acts as a community preceptor for newly hired Medical Assistants, providing guidance and support.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • New hires must successfully complete MA Clinic Academy training.
  • Completion of all required competencies for Advanced Medical Assistant role.

Certifications

  • Current BLS (Basic Life Support) certification required.

Preferred Qualifications

Education

  • Graduate of an accredited Medical Assistant program.

Experience

  • Minimum of two (2) years of documented experience as a Medical Assistant.

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

  • Demonstrates strong understanding of quality performance metrics and proactively identifies trends, patterns, and improvement opportunities.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to engage patients, providers, and staff effectively.
  • Proficiency in EHR systems and clinical documentation.
  • Ability to multitask, prioritize, and adapt in a fast‑paced outpatient clinical environment.
  • Knowledge of common outpatient procedures, workflows, and clinical equipment.
  • Commitment to patient‑centered care, quality improvement, and ongoing professional development.
  • Demonstrates cultural awareness and understanding of diverse populations and behaviors.

Work Environment

  • Outpatient clinical setting with frequent and direct patient interaction.
  • Regular use of clinical equipment.
  • Potential exposure to infectious materials; appropriate PPE is provided.
