Sales Associate – Gift Shop

Mercy Hospital St. Louis | Full-Time

Hours - 12pm - 8pm M-F and every other weekend 10am - 6pm

Position Summary

Mercy Hospital St. Louis is seeking a customer-focused and compassionate Sales Associate to join our Gift Shop team. The primary responsibility of this role is to provide exceptional service to patients, visitors, and customers while supporting the daily operations of the Gift Shop. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a positive, outgoing, and caring attitude and possess the ability to learn and promote products in health, wellness, and gift categories.

The Sales Associate will work in all areas of the Gift Shop to ensure smooth operations and will perform duties in a manner consistent with Mercy's mission, values, and Service Standards.

Reports To: Gift Shop Manager

Schedule
  • Full-Time (40 hours per week)
  • Hours: 12:00 PM – 8:00 PM
  • Every other weekend: 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM
Key Responsibilities Customer Service & Sales
  • Greet and engage all patients, visitors, and customers with compassion and respect.
  • Deliver an exceptional customer experience and build customer loyalty.
  • Learn and effectively communicate product features and benefits.
  • Recommend products and utilize cross-merchandising techniques to drive sales.
  • Assist customers with special orders, including personalization, printing, floral arrangements, and gift basket preparation.
  • Deliver gift shop orders to patients throughout the hospital.
Retail Operations
  • Operate the point-of-sale (POS) system accurately and efficiently.
  • Handle cash transactions and complete required paperwork according to established procedures.
  • Stock merchandise, replenish sales floor inventory, and maintain product displays.
  • Communicate inventory needs to management.
  • Assist with physical inventory preparation and counts.
  • Maintain knowledge of merchandise locations, pricing, and product availability.
  • Follow merchandising plans and visual display standards.
Safety & Compliance
  • Maintain confidentiality at all times.
  • Follow opening, closing, and security procedures.
  • Adhere to policies regarding cash handling, key control, safety, and dress code.
  • Remain aware of surroundings and proactively engage customers to minimize theft and loss prevention concerns.
Teamwork & Communication
  • Foster a positive team environment and collaborate effectively with coworkers.
  • Attend departmental meetings and follow all departmental policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrate effective communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Maintain positive working relationships with colleagues, patients, visitors, and leadership.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications Required
  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.

  • Strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize responsibilities.
  • Commitment to providing compassionate service in a healthcare environment.
Preferred
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • 2-3 years of retail experience.
  • Experience working with a POS system.
  • Retail sales experience involving gifts, wellness, or specialty products.
