Position Summary

The Surgical Technologist performs the primary role of supporting surgical procedures in the Operating Room. This position is accountable for preparing and maintaining surgical instruments, supporting the surgical team, and coordinating patient care while maintaining confidentiality, patient rights, and sterile technique. All duties are carried out in alignment with Mercy's mission, values, and Service Standards.

Key Responsibilities

Surgical & Clinical Support

  • Anticipate the needs of the surgeon and operative team while maintaining sterile technique and patient comfort
  • Assist surgeons in a knowledgeable, efficient, and courteous manner
  • Prepare, organize, and maintain instruments and equipment using procedure preference cards
  • Participate in updating surgeon preference cards as needed
  • Inspect instruments and power equipment before use; troubleshoot, report, and remove faulty equipment from service
  • Perform or assist with sterile preps and monitor aseptic technique throughout procedures
  • Immediately recognize, report, and correct breaks in sterile technique
  • Control and manage contaminated instruments and supplies appropriately

Equipment & Room Preparation

  • Prepare instruments, equipment, and supplies for efficient surgical procedures
  • Perform point‑of‑use cleaning during procedures per policy
  • Handle unused supplies following established guidelines
  • Complete room turnover and termination tasks per department procedures

Communication & Teamwork

  • Anticipate surgeon needs and communicate proactively with the circulator
  • Recognize and report emergency situations promptly
  • Confirm correct specimens and disposition with the circulator under physician direction
  • Communicate procedure delays or early completions to ensure efficient room utilization
  • Report instrument and equipment issues and identify repair needs
  • Utilize downtime effectively by restocking rooms, planning for upcoming cases, and assisting team members
  • Demonstrate flexibility with assignments, workload, and scheduling changes

Qualifications & Requirements

Education

  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • Proof of education may be required

Licensure / Certification

  • Surgical Technologist certification preferred
  • Non‑certified applicants may be considered with acceptable surgical technology experience
  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) required

Experience

  • Surgical Technology experience required for non‑certified applicants
  • Operating Room experiences preferred

Additional Requirements

  • Must be able to understand, speak, read, and write English
  • Must be able to safely and successfully perform essential job functions, with or without reasonable accommodation, in accordance with federal, state, and local laws
