Position Summary

Under the leadership of the department director, assistant director, nursing supervisor, and/or charge nurse, the registered nurse is responsible and accountable for planning directing, assessing and providing nursing care according to the policies and procedures of the hospital and department. Important dimensions of this position consist of quality of care, professional commitment, teamwork, interpersonal skills, safety, good public/customer relations and a broad nursing knowledge.  

The qualified staff RN will partake in a Perinatal Orientation Education training program for Labor, Delivery, Recovery, and Postpartum Maternal and Infant Care directed by the clinical educator. The training is inclusive of all aspects of perinatal nursing including obstetric operating room circulating and post anesthesia recovery of the OB patient. Training will be completed on all shifts by: in house classroom lecture, required courses, web-based learning, clinical practice, and multidisciplinary simulation drills (these may be videotaped and reviewed for teaching purposes). The majority of training will be completed with an experienced preceptor on the unit. Additional requirements include comprehensive education on breastfeeding.

Must be highly motivated, perform well under pressure, enjoy working with people and have a passion for working in a maternal-infant unit. Excellent assessment and critical thinking skills, the ability to work in a fast-paced and often stressful environment and the ability to work autonomously and as a team member are essential.

The FBC is a full service birthing center with 13 birthing suites where the RN will be responsible for antepartum, labor, delivery, circulating, recovery, post-partum, and normal newborn/couplet care. We are a BABYFRIENDLY™ designated hospital. The expectation for all staff is to adhere to the “10 Steps” of the BABYFRIENDLY™ initiative.

Experience 

One year of current hospital acute care nursing experience with mother baby care experience preferred. New graduate considered on an individual basis. L&D or Postpartum senior preceptorship highly desirable.

Education

Bachelor's degree in nursing preferred.

Must pass orientation and initial competency assessment prior to independent assignment of patients requiring the applicable skill.

Licensure/Certifications

State of California RN license required. American Heart Association Healthcare Provider BLS (required).

NRP-Advanced Provider, and AWHONN Intermediate External Fetal Monitoring, and ACLS certification must be obtained prior to completion of orientation and independent assignment for those hired/transferred on or after January 1, 2025. AWHONN Advanced External Fetal Monitoring (EFM) must be obtained upon initial expiration of Intermediate Fetal Monitoring. (AWHONN Intermediate External Fetal Monitoring is an acceptable option for renewal after initial completion of the AWHONN Advanced EFM class has been obtained). S.T.A.B.L.E. preferred.

The hours employees work determine when a shift differential is paid.

Hourly Evening Shift Differential: $5.50 Hourly Night Shift Differential: $8.00
