A Maternal-Fetal Medicine (MFM) Sonographer is a diagnostic ultrasound professional that performs sonographic assessments of maternal-fetal conditions with minimal guidance and supervision. A person in this role is able to perform routine obstetric ultrasound cases independently, and is able to perform obstetric ultrasound cases with complexities under the supervision of the MFM and/or experienced MFM Sonographer. A MFM sonographer must have reasonable knowledge in various fetal conditions and anomalies as well as an understanding of contributing high-risk maternal factors. This person must demonstrate competency and must hold the appropriate ARDMS certification(s), which is the standard of practice in ultrasound. The expectation of this role is to pursue professional credentialing which includes the Fetal Echocardiography registry, OBGYN registry, as well as the nuchal translucency/nasal bone certification through Fetal Medicine Foundation. In addition, the scope of practice of the diagnostic MFM sonographer includes those procedures, acts, and processes permitted by law, for which the individual has received education and clinical experience.Participates in providing patient specific care standards as directed, and follows service excellence standards to ensure high levels of patient satisfaction.
Education and Experience:
Graduate of an educational program in Diagnostic Medical Sonography or minimum one-year obstetrics (OB) experience.
A single two-year allied health education program that is patient-care related (Allied health occupations include, but are not limited to, diagnostic medical sonographer, radiologic technologist, respiratory therapist, occupational therapist, physical therapist and registered nurse.) OR Graduate of a program accredited by an agency recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA), United States Department of Education (USDOE) or Canadian Medical Association (CMA), that specifically conducts programmatic accreditation for diagnostic medical sonography/diagnostic cardiac sonography/vascular technology. (Currently (as of 12/2013) the only organizations that offer programmatic accreditation under the aforementioned associations are the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) and the Canadian Medical Association (CMA)); Minimum one year experience as a diagnostic medical sonographer.
Associates Degree or higher in related technological field. One-year previous experience as an MFM Sonographer.
Licenses and Certificates:
Credentials with the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS), new graduates must obtain certification within one year of graduation date.
Current certification with the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) registered in OB within one year of hire.
Fetal Nuchal Translucency and Nasal Bone Certification through the Fetal Medicine Foundation. If the NT or NB certification was not obtained through the Fetal Medicine Foundation (FMF), employee has one (1) year from the date of hire to convert to the FMF credentialing. If previously held certification lapses, employee has three months post expiration to renew license; during this time employee is only allowed to scan applicable exams with a certified NT or NB preceptor.
Fetal Echocardiography (FE) through the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) within two years of hire. Exam must be taken within two years of hire date. If results are not available at two-year mark due to ARDMS, results waiting period, employee is allowed to work until results become available.
