Position Summary:
The Metallurgist will oversee the daily operation of the Metallurgical Laboratory and provide for its efficient operation. He/she will serve as a technical resource to Sig Sauer Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality and Supply Chain functions with regard to material selection, processing, and testing. He/she will interface with Sig Sauer suppliers and outside laboratories to assure that requirements are well defined and adhered to. The metallurgist will lead by example. He/she will assure that testing is performed to the highest professional standards in accordance with the applicable specifications, on equipment which is calibrated and maintained in good working order to yield accurate, reproducible results. The metallurgist will see that results of tests are communicated in clear concise reports. He/she will maintain technical proficiency and provide for the training of laboratory personnel.

Primary Responsibilities:
*Main focus area to be in non-ferrous alloys, with occasional work in ferrous materials.
*Provide technical direction and establish priorities for the Metallurgical Laboratory and its personnel.
*Maintain the Lab in good order through the application of 5S workplace organizational activities.
*Create and maintain appropriate documentation to include work instructions, Heat Treat Specs, Material Specs, Lab Orders and logs, Lab Reports.
*Prepare samples for metallographic examination and micro-hardness testing by sectioning, rough grinding, mounting, fine grinding, polishing and etching.
*Interpret microstructures and draw conclusions regarding the material and the associated heat treat processes.
*Perform micro-hardness tests, (Vickers and Knoop), per applicable standards (eg, ASTM).
*Perform failure analysis, draw conclusions from data, and report the results in clear technical language supplemented by photographs.
*Maintain identification of material submitted for testing, including the associated metallurgical mounts. Store mounts in an organized manner to allow retrieval as required.
*Utilize Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel to prepare reports, including photographs, which present data and summarize conclusions in a clear technical manner.
*Maintain all Lab equipment in good working order and in calibration.
*Perform basic measurements utilizing micrometers, digital indicators, calipers, scales, etc.
*Promote safe handling of chemicals in compliance with all applicable environmental regulations.
*Perform other duties as assigned.

Secondary Responsibilities:
*Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to senior leaders, customers, suppliers, and fellow employees
*Lead problem solving teams for driving to root cause of internal and external quality failures, particularly related to prevention of customer escapes.

Education and/or Experience:
*BS Degree in Metallurgical Engineering or Material Science plus 5 years' experience as a practicing metallurgist.
*Familiarity with the properties and processing of materials used in the ammunition industry, with primary focus on non-ferrous alloys (eg, brass, copper).
*Experience with the heat treat and surface treatment processes common to the ammunition industry.
*Proficiency with basic measuring instruments (micrometers, indicators, calipers, scales, etc.)
*Strong problem-solving skills and demonstrated ability to work to a high professional standard as a member of a multi-disciplinary team in a fast-paced environment.
*Strong computer skills (Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, etc.)
*Excellent written and verbal communication.
