Lead Product Researcher

Locations: London, Essex | Hybrid

The Opportunity

SS&C plays a critical role in the asset and wealth management industry, and our Product team has the opportunity to shape digital solutions for institutional investors, asset managers, and advisors. This role sits within the Global Investor and Distribution Solutions (GIDS), the business unit that delivers global omni-channel investor servicing, including contact centre, as well as digital services.

We're looking for an exceptional hands-on Lead Product Researcher to establish and lead our research function from the ground up. This is our first hire in this area, and the role encompasses responsibility for all our research and continuous discovery, to integrate evidence-based decision-making tightly into how we design, build, and evolve our products. The successful candidate will be responsible for user research, competitor research, market research and industry research.

This role will suit a confident, inquisitive, and highly organised individual contributor who can define research strategy, deliver hands-on studies, and influence decisions across the product lifecycle. You will uncover customer needs, pain points, and wow moments, ensuring that what we build truly meets the expectations of our clients and their end users. You will help us demonstrate the value of this function to both stakeholders and clients, thereby becoming sponsors for its further growth and development.

What You Will Get To Do:

  • Own user research, competitor research, market research and industry research.
  • Champion research-driven thinking across Product, Design, and Engineering, ensuring every decision is grounded in customer understanding.
  • Define and implement our product research strategy, setting the standards, tools, and processes for discovery and validation activities.
  • Act as the research authority within the team, helping establish best practice and raising the bar for user-centred product development.
  • Collaborate with Product Analytics to design and interpret, amongst others, A/B and multivariate tests that measure the impact of features and user experiences.

Customer, Market & Competitor Insight

  • Plan and execute end-to-end research using both qualitative and quantitative methods, including but not limited to interviews, surveys, usability testing, workshops, and focus groups, to uncover user behaviours and motivations.
  • Conduct market, competitor, and industry research to identify trends, gaps, and opportunities across all product areas, ensuring we remain ahead of the market.
  • Develop and maintain an insight repository for all the research, enabling Product Managers and Designers to easily access research findings and customer feedback.
  • Gather and synthesise client feedback through multiple channels, helping us close the loop with customers and improve satisfaction.

Testing & Experimentation

  • Work closely with Product Managers, Designers, and Engineers to introduce and scale experimentation practices across our products.
  • Design and support A/B and concept tests to validate hypotheses and measure the impact of design and feature changes.
  • Help define and monitor metrics such as NPS, satisfaction, usability, and adoption to track the effectiveness of product decisions.

Decision Support & Storytelling

  • Translate complex research findings into clear narratives and actionable recommendations for technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Create personas, journey maps, and behaviour frameworks that inform product strategy and design.
  • Deliver presentations, reports, and visualisations that make the voice of the customer tangible and memorable.
  • Advise internal teams and, where relevant, collaborate on client-facing consultancy projects focused on user behaviour, design validation, and experience optimisation.

Collaboration & Culture

  • Work closely with Product Analytics, Product Management, and Design to embed continuous discovery and experimentation into our ways of working.
  • Influence product culture, championing curiosity, evidence, and customer empathy as part of our product-led transformation.
  • Provide informal coaching and knowledge-sharing to help others run and interpret research confidently.

What You Will Bring:

  • Bachelor's degree required; postgraduate qualification in behavioural science, human-computer interaction, design research, or a related field is a plus.
  • Proven experience as a UX or Product Researcher, Insight Lead, or similar role, with at least 4+ years at a senior level in product-led or research-driven organisations.
  • Track record of delivering actionable research that directly influenced product strategy, design, or commercial decisions.
  • Hands-on experience with qualitative and quantitative methods (e.g. interviews, surveys, usability testing, focus groups, screen-recording analysis, A/B testing).
  • Experience conducting competitor and market analysis, translating findings into strategic opportunities.
  • Proficient with research and feedback tools (e.g. UserTesting, Maze, Hotjar, Typeform, Optimal Workshop, Dovetail, Lookback, or similar).
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret data and identify meaningful insights.
  • Excellent communication and storytelling skills; able to turn evidence into persuasive narratives.
  • Highly organised, self-starter mindset, comfortable establishing new functions and processes 0-1.
  • Curiosity, creativity, and a passion for understanding users and driving customer-centric innovation.
