Overview

The Lakes and Ponds Program of the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation seeks an energetic and outgoing technician to join our aquatic invasive species management team. The primary responsibility of the incumbent will be to serve as the VT Public Access Greeter Coordinator that includes being a traveling AIS educator, identifying aquatic plant and animal specimens, watercraft inspector, and watercraft decontamination specialist. This will involve travel to public access areas and outreach events around the state with informational materials and a portable watercraft decontamination unit.

 

It is expected that the incumbent will become an expert in watercraft decontamination and may support other watercraft decontamination efforts around the state. The incumbent will also perform other duties as needed by the AIS section that will include water chestnut monitoring and management, data entry, and basic data analysis. Because this position will focus on outreach at public access areas that are typically busiest on weekends, it is expected that the incumbent will work one day during the weekend. Preference will be given to those with previous experience in AIS spread prevention efforts, those familiar with watercraft decontamination protocols, and experience working on small engines.

 

Specific job duties include:

  • Assist with the planning and coordination of the state-wide Vermont Public Access Greeter Program and administered by municipalities and lake associations. Assist with the preparation and presentation of Greeter Trainings and publications as needed.
  • Communicate with network of VT Public Access Greeters and conduct personal one-on-one watercraft and decontamination trainings independently and throughout the State to ensure practices and procedures are completed safely, accurately, and appropriately while maintaining professional standards.
  • Transcribe to technological platforms to increase efficiency for the program as a whole. This includes developing, managing, and collecting data and geospatial information.
  • Prepare, present, and disseminate technical AIS reports and publications to a wide variety of constituents including the public, municipalities, research institutions, and governmental agencies.  
  • Ability to operate and safely use hand and power tools for the maintenance of vehicles, buildings, and equipment. Knowledge of the operation and mechanical maintenance of, and repair techniques for, equipment used at the assigned facility.

 

Who May Apply

This position, Environmental Technician IV - Aquatic Invasive Species Greeter - Temporary (Job Requisition #54777), is open to all State employees and external applicants. This is a temporary position. Temporary work is typically for variable hours, and is not expected to be full-time. The State does not guarantee 40 hours of work per week.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in engineering, a biological life or physical science, math, or natural resources field AND three 3 years or more at or above a technical level in an environmental or natural resources field. OR Associate's degree in engineering, a biological life or physical science, math, or natural resources field AND five 5 years or more of experience at or above a technical level in an environmental or natural resources field.

 

OR

 

Two 2 years or more of experience as an Environmental Technician III.
