Overview

The Vermont Department of Health has an exciting opportunity to be on the front lines of protecting public health in Vermont. The successful candidate will conduct a variety of public health inspections of general sanitation practices or environmental health conditions. These positions work closely with regulated facilities to ensure compliance with Vermont's food and lodging establishment regulations. The ideal candidate is a motivated self-starter who works well independently and as part of a team. 

 

The inspection territory for this position will be in the Chittenden County area of the state and will have a duty station in Burlington. 


This position is being recruited at multiple levels. Public Health Inspector I is an entry level position where on-line, classroom and field-based training will be provided. It is expected that Inspector II and III candidates will have previous environmental health, food safety, sanitation and food processing training and experience. Familiarization with the FDA Food Code and Good Manufacturing Practices for food processors is a plus. Overnight and out-of-state training may be required for certain training opportunities.

AHS BACKGROUND CHECKS:  Candidates must pass any level of background investigation applicable to the position.  In accordance with AHS Policy 4.02, Hiring Standards, Vermont and/or national criminal record checks, as well as DMV and adult and child abuse registry checks, as appropriate to the position under recruitment, will be conducted on candidates, with the exception of those who are current classified state employees seeking transfer, promotion or demotion into an AHS classified position or are persons exercising re-employment (RIF) rights.

Environmental Factors

Duties are performed in the field and usually in an assigned district. Incumbents generally encounter strong differences of opinion and emotional reactions which must be dealt with in a firm, objective and helpful manner. Subject to operating specialized environmental health testing equipment. Private means of transportation is necessary. Some evening or weekend work may be required.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree with major coursework in a physical or biological science, nutrition, nursing, health, food science, environmental engineering, or a closely related field where the coursework requirements include 2 or more courses in food safety and sanitation AND two (2) or more years of experience at the Public Health Inspector II level or the equivalent position in a similar government organization with demonstrated advanced food safety training and experience in training and mentoring other staff.

OR

Associate's degree or two years of full-time college coursework with major coursework in a physical or biological science, nutrition, nursing, health, food science, environmental engineering, or a closely related field where the coursework requirements include 2 or more courses in food safety and sanitation AND four (4) or more years of experience at the Public Health Inspector II level or the equivalent position in a similar government organization with demonstrated advanced food safety training and experience in training and mentoring other staff.
