Overview
The Agency of Transportation is responsible for operations and maintenance of four Rail Trails across the state, the Delaware and Hudson (DHRT), the Missisquoi Valley (MVRT), the Lamoille Valley (LVRT), and the Beebe Spur (BBRT), totaling approximately 150 miles. These are 4 season trails which serve as economic drivers for many communities and have a variety of recreational users. The Agency is responsible for local/regional coordination, maintenance, marketing, communications, and general oversight of these trails.
The Operations Technician position for the Statewide Rail Trails Program requires attention to detail, ability to interact with diversity of public facing customers from trail users to municipal staff maintaining abutting assets such as connecting trails and trailheads. Primary duties will involve maintenance projects. Duties will primarily be be performed in the field.
It is anticipated that these positions will work up to 40 hours per week for up to seven months.
This position is considered a Transportation Operations Technician I by the Department of Human Resources.

Temporary work is typically for variable hours and is not expected to be full-time. The State does not guarantee 40 hours of work per week.

Environmental FactorsDuties require working in extreme outdoor weather conditions. All employees may be required to report to work outside of their area /work schedule and must be reachable by phone. Dangers are present when work is performed near heavy equipment, hazardous materials, and roadside litter. Employees may be exposed to blood and airborne pathogens. Hazards are always present when working on the roads as traffic passes, emergencies such as flood, ice, snow hazardous materials. An incumbent must be able to use tools and equipment commonly used for maintenance work as well as lift materials commonly used in maintenance work. Participation in a random drug and alcohol-testing program is required prior to operation of vehicles or operating equipment. Considerable overtime work is required, particularly during the winter months, and is considered a condition of employment.
Minimum QualificationsNo education or experience required.
Applicants must be at least 18 years old.
High school diploma or equivalent.
Special RequirementsA valid driver's license is required.
An incumbent must live within reasonable proximity of assigned workstation.
