Your Role:


This is an exciting opportunity to transform our current bridge capability and establish it as one of the leading bridge teams in the UK.  We have a range of blue-chip clients and a strong order-book but we need someone with the capability to take us to the next level.  With a combination of business acumen, technical capability and productive relationships, the candidate will build on the strong foundations already in place to realise their potential.

Reporting to, and working with, the Director for Major Highways, the Director (Bridges) will have a proven record of working on a variety of bridge and civil engineering structures as designer, lead designer and technical lead. They will have an established reputation within this discipline, operating across sectors and they will be expected to be familiar with all aspects of bridge and civil engineering structural projects with an emphasis on the highways sector.


The candidate will have a strong technical background specialising in bridges, culverts, retaining walls and tunnels. He or she will be experienced in managing and leading projects and directing and motivating professional and technical staff in the delivery of medium and large sized transport projects, typically up to £20 million aggregate capital value and with up to 10 significant structures.


You will take the lead in developing and coordinating Tetra Tech's bridge capability, preparing and delivering a development strategy and acting as the leading work winner for the bridge teams.  The role will include the strategic planning and management of bridge resources across the company and will therefore include the requirement for travel, mainly in the UK, but occasionally abroad.



 Key accountabilities:


  • Develop and deliver a strategy for the development of bridge design services within Tetra Tech
  • Manage at a strategic level all bridge resources within the UK
  • Proactively develop client base and business profile and act as leading work winner within the bridges sector
  • Provide expertise in the field of bridge and civil engineering structures
  • Management of discipline function and projects
  • Develop business relationships and strategic alliances
  • Lead, motivate, develop and manage the performance of others
  • Management of P&L and working capital
  • Hold successful relationship with client(s)
  • Shape client needs and scope of work
  • Set and manage client expectations
  • Agree fee schedules and commercial terms
  • Oversee the delivery of the agreed scope of work
  • A reputation and profile as a ‘technical champion' in specialism (both internally and externally)
  • Facilitate the professional and personal development of staff
  • Adopt cross-capability approach to business development


Skills, knowledge and experience:


  • Able to demonstrate a recent broad experience, knowledge and understanding of current DMRB bridge design standards and Highways England approval and certification procedures, including the necessary products to be produced at the various stage gates in the Project Control Framework.
  • Experienced at working as part of an integrated design team, preferably in an ECI or D&B environment.
  • Experienced in leading bridge design teams and taking responsibility for the successful delivery of packages of structures to programme and cost.
  • Full understanding of the relevant bridge design software packages and proficient in their use.
  • Knowledge and understanding of design to BS codes and Eurocodes.
  • Ability to develop innovative and cost-effective solutions to the design of bridge structures, including buildability and alternative construction methods.
  • Knowledge and experience of working with Network Rail on highway bridges over/under railway lines - a detailed understanding of Network Rail procedures and constraints would be an advantage.
  • Familiar with the Code of Practice Well-managed highway infrastructure.
  • Experience in the use of Design for Manufacture and Assembly and prefabrication of bridge components would be an advantage, but not essential.
  • Demonstrate the successful delivery of highway bridge design and construction documentation.
  • Proficient in report writing and the production of the products required by the Highways England's Project Control Framework procedures at the various gateway stages.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills essential.
  • Practical experience of civil engineering works, preferably within a consultancy environment, including:
    • Bridge / structures design and assessment
    • Bridge / structures inspection
    • Drainage and earthworks design and remediation
    • Surveying / setting out.
  • Degree qualified with appropriate professional qualifications.
  • Chartered Civil Engineer C Eng. MICE or MIStructE.
  • Driving license.
