What We Can Achieve Together:

The Climate Metrics Specialist is responsible for the quality and overall accuracy of climate metrics both for the Global Climate team but also in service of key priority climate projects and strategies across TNC.  The Climate Metrics Specialist will primarily support climate mitigation metrics, particularly carbon accounting, but will also, in time, build expertise and familiarity with climate adaptation metrics and help ensure the effectiveness and overall accountability of priority strategies and programs in service of the 2030 climate goals.  They will support the Office of the CCO's Conservation Impact System team to ensure climate metrics are high quality and accurately capture the impact of the climate projects and programs. 

The Climate Metrics Specialist will report to the Global Climate Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning lead and will work closely with the Conservation Metrics Lead in the Office of the CCO.   They will serve as the Global Climate team's primary expert on monitoring in service of 2030 goal climate metrics.   They will also serve as the primary leader and advisor for the Global Climate team and other teams across TNC for the development of any needed proxy metrics and measures in service of the Climate 2030 goals. 

The location for this position is flexible within countries where The Nature Conservancy has an established office. Salary is based on physical working location. No relocation assistance.

This is a two-year funded position with the possibility for extension based on deliverables and funding.

We're Looking for You:

The Climate Metrics Specialist provides technical and scientific support and leadership for climate metrics in service of the 2030 goals.  Specifically, they help with technical support and advice and ensure metric accounting reliability and accuracy.  They work closely with field programs as well as the Conservation Impact Systems team, particularly their metrics lead, to support members of the global climate team as well as TNC field teams to refine their 2030 goal metrics in service of their monitoring, evaluation, and learning plans.  

RESPONSIBILITIES & SCOPE

  • Develop adaptive management plans with a focus on metrics.
  • Design proxy metrics or help support methods for measuring 2030 goal climate metrics.
  • Conduct carbon accounting and ensure accounting for additionality in carbon sequestration metrics.
  • Support, especially more over time, climate adaptation and emissions reduction metric refinement and help teams achieve high quality measures and metrics.
  • Be primary expert and point of contact for Global Climate team on all aspects of metrics and support priority field projects and strategies with metric refinement, as appropriate.
  • Work with the MEL lead on Global Climate to develop and help deploy any necessary proxy metrics in service of the 2030 climate metrics.                               
  • Deliver tools and training to staff and partners, as appropriate.                                          
  • Support the design and implementation of adaptive management and monitoring protocols with a focus on metrics. 
  • May lead staff, interns or volunteers on a project basis.                      
  • May manage a grant, contract or request for proposal.                      
  • Must work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, in hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances.
What You'll Bring:
  • Master's Degree in science related field and 2 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.                  
  • Experience leading and working with cross functional teams.                                      
  • Experience synthesizing, interpreting and communicating scientific information.        
  • Experience preparing reports of findings. 
  • Record of peer reviewed publications in scientific journals.
  • Experience working and communicating with a wide range of people.
  • Experience with carbon accounting and additionality concerns with outcome based measures. 
  • Experience working with climate programs and projects across the Conservancy on metrics quality and metrics use. 

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Previous or current experience working with The Nature Conservancy is strongly preferred
  •    Multi-language skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
  •     Strong knowledge of common software applications.
  •     Proven negotiation skills.
  •     Ability to make independent decisions.
  •     Experience working across cultures and languages.
  •     Extensive experience in the field of monitoring, evaluation, and learning.
  •     Attention to detail.
  •     Training experience.
  •     Ability to meet deadlines.
Salary Information:

This position may be based in any country where TNC has an established entity, taking into consideration legal restrictions, such as non-national ratios and immigration processing times. For U.S. based applicants only, the starting pay range for this position is generally within the range of $58,500 – $100,725 for annual base salary and is based on location, qualifications, specific skills, and experience. This range only applies to candidates whose country of employment is the USA. For all other applicants, pay ranges will be in local currency, the pay range will be based on the local labor market, and not tied to the above pay range. Your geographic location will be confirmed during the recruitment and used to determine your actual pay range. Additionally, for all applicants, actual pay will fall within a range based on a variety of factors including, for example, the candidate's qualifications, specific skills, and experience.
