This position is being advertised as either a Community Education Specialist (CES) 2 or 3 depending on the level of experience of the hired applicant. If the applicant is hired as a CES 2, they will be hired in a learning and development role. More of their duties will be direct nutrition education and there will be less program leadership, community partnership development and leadership of policy, system and environmental (PSE) activities. If the applicant is hired as a CES 3, duties would include providing leadership and mentoring to interns and CES 2 staff as well as actively identifying, leading and evaluating policy, system and environmental changes at educational sites and long-range planning for community education programs. 

 

This position is a career appointment that is 100% fixed.

 

Pay Scale:

CES 2: $46,100.00/year to $61,300.00/year

CES 3: $50,200.00/year to $67,500.00/year

Key Responsibilities:

35%

• Performs full range of program implementation duties for the CalFresh Healthy Living Nutrition Education Program within Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Education (SNAP-Ed) guidelines.

• Trains and provides ongoing support to extenders (including agency staff, teachers, educators, interns, and volunteers) and CES staff with the CalFresh Healthy Living Nutrition Education Program approved curricula content and Policy, Systems and Environmental Change (PSE) projects and initiatives.

• Develops, implements and evaluates plans for engaging community stakeholders in PSE change strategies supportive of healthy eating and increased physical activity at qualifying sites.

• Maintains contact with teacher extenders and/or oversight of CES to ensure collection of program enrollment data, accurate activity tracking, and submission of evaluation forms/surveys according to data collection protocols.

• Maintains regular, successful communication with partner agencies and school administration.

• Prepares lesson materials and delivers nutrition and physical activity education lessons and food demonstrations/tastings to qualifying low-income children and adults which respect participant's cultural and ethnic background and access to food and physical activity opportunities and as informed by approved county SNAP-ED Integrated Work Plans.

• Builds community support for, recruits, and facilitates youth and/or community engagement projects to support nutrition and physical activity objectives including peer to peer education, community education, indirect education, and PSE change implementation.

• Develops and/or conducts teacher extender, youth or adult volunteer, and/or CES training on approved curricula, materials, program evaluation forms, reporting, program policies and procedures, etc.

• Performs administrative tasks as necessary to prepare, deliver, evaluate and report on education intervention and trainings. This may include duplication of materials, creating and maintaining secure filing systems, organizing and purchasing of program related materials and supplies, timely reporting of expenses, developing tracking tools and spreadsheets, pulling data from surveys or portals, taking meeting notes, etc.

• Represents UCCE and the nutrition education programs in a professional manner.

• Ensures food safe practices and procedures are followed and notifies the supervisor immediately of concerns or issues.

20%

• Coordinates Student Assistant (interns) and CES positions with supervisor oversight. Mentors and trains other CES positions and teacher extenders as appropriate.

• Provides training and oversight on program procedures, curriculum, PSE Change projects and oversees teaching in the field to ensure quality control and compliance.

• Provides input to staff performance and development, team building and communications, resolution of issues and conflicts, review and approval of work, and hiring and training employees. May create and facilitate team meeting agendas.

• Ensures quality control and compliance with established standards and procedures for assigned programs. Assigns, monitors and reviews progress and accuracy of work for CES or student interns.

• Advises supervisor on changes and proposed improvements to nutrition education program based on evaluation data and direct program delivery.

• Collaborates with supervisor to assist in long range planning including in the development of the annual and 3-year integrated work plan to optimize direct delivery, to manage volunteer extender programs, to improve community engagement efforts, to develop recommendations for improvement, and to facilitate PSE change activities with partner agencies.

• Provides summaries of evaluation data collection and progress toward goals.

• Collaborates on budgets and monitoring of accounting for programmatic development and financial reporting.

• Provides administrative support to ensure accurate and timely reporting of program efforts, data entry and evaluation data and quality control.

• Develops and submits written program reports and success stories as requested by the program supervisor.

20%

• Develops recruitment, re-enrollment, and implementation strategies for teacher extenders.

• Identifies and utilizes appropriate assessment tools to develop, expand, and/or evaluate PSE projects.

• Develops teacher and youth extender trainings and adult workshops to meet the educational and cultural needs of the participants.

• Participates in piloting new curriculum, PSE projects, materials, delivery, or evaluation methods.

• Seeks new resources and/or proposes development of new materials to potentially use in the nutrition education program.

• Trains new staff and/or develops training materials as necessary to meet program needs.

• Develops new materials as needed and actively promotes and markets the CalFresh Healthy Living Nutrition Education Program to schools, partners, community organizations, through social media channels, and agencies serving SNAP-Ed eligible populations in order to recruit and enroll participants in nutrition programs.

15%

• Maintains team collaboration through meeting/training attendance and consistent written and verbal communication including, but not limited to, weekly schedule, program objectives, and team projects.

• Serves as a team lead for specific areas of expertise (i.e youth engagement, garden education, adult education, etc.) and provides coordination, training, serves as a state office liaison, and provides programmatic support in that area.

• Develops collaborative partnerships to further nutrition program goals with internal and external partners, coalitions, work groups, and community agencies.

• Develops liaisons with and between other nutrition and physical activity programs and organizations to coordinate outreach efforts. Maintains appropriate records tracking the partnerships, collaborations and community events.

10%

• Collects and compiles yearly enrollment, monthly documentation, and evaluation data from teacher extenders, youth and adult participants to measure program delivery and effectiveness. Works with CE Supervisor, Advisor, and Regional Manager to analyze and utilize evaluation data to suggest program improvements and when training CES.

 

Requirements:

  • Associate Degree in related are and/or equivalent experience / training
  • Continuing education in related field
  • Experience working with socio-economically, racially, and/or ethnically diverse youth or adults
  • Experience with Microsoft Office, Google Drive, social Required media, and/or other web-based programs
  • Skills to communicate and work in large and small groups, give presentations and organize units of activities
  • Strong written communication skills using professional writing format
  • Experience supervising and/or training others
  • Thorough knowledge of organization policies and procedures

Preferred Skills:

  • Advanced working knowledge of budgets and grant-funded programs
  • Ability to write newsletters, correspondence, and reports
  • Working knowledge of conducting needs assessment
  • Experience with food preparation or recipe demonstrations
  • Knowledge of community education and or teaching practices
  • Experience with gardening or production food
  • Familiarity with schools and community-based agencies in the local area serving eligible adults and youth
  • Bilingual communication/translation abilities in English and Spanish

Special Conditions of Employment:

  • Must possess valid California Driver's License to drive a County or University vehicle. Ability and means to travel on a flexible schedule as needed, proof of liability damage insurance on vehicle used is required. Reimbursement of job-related travel will be reimbursed according to University policies.
  • Travel including travel outside normal business hours may be requested.
  • Must comply with regulatory agency reporting requirements (California's Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act).
