Department Summary:

The IGIS Statewide Program is ANR's primary resource for geospatial knowledge and innovation. Geospatial tools and technology play a role in nearly everything ANR focuses on, from agricultural research and extension, to management of forest and rangelands, to community engagement. Accordingly, IGIS's mission statement states “IGIS envisions an ANR where all local and statewide research and extension programs integrate cutting edge geospatial data and tools into analysis, project planning, and communication”.

Position Summary:

IGIS invites applications for a GIS Programmer Analyst to join our team to advance our Core mission and provide GIS outreach, education, and technical services to IGIS's Core Clientele (ANR researchers and staff). The GIS Analyst will work closely with our small creative team of GIS programmers and spatial data scientists to better understand the needs of ANR programs and researchers, reach out to new and existing internal audiences, and develop new GIS training and services that respond to needs. We are looking for a GIS Analyst with a broad set of experiences who is curious about real world problems facing ANR researchers and programs, enjoys learning and teaching, and is excited about solving practical, real world problems with GIS tools and data.

This position is a career appointment that is 100% fixed. 

Pay Scale: $28.30/hour to $38.51/hour

Key Responsibilities:

35%

Works with users to define needs for applications, and uses GIS to perform basic spatial analysis, web and database development to support a variety of academic, community, administrative and other applications.

25%

Develop and implement GIS extension programming on applications of GIS tools and data for specific research and extension needs, including workshops, webinars, blog posts, clinics, video tutorials, tech notes, presentations, etc.

25%

Develop and implement an outreach and marketing strategy for IGIS Core Clientele, including a needs assessment and marketing survey of IGIS Core Clientele (i.e., ANR staff & researchers).

10%

Support IGIS research projects as needed.

5%

Support project evaluation and impact assessment as needed.

Requirements:

  • BA/BS (or equivalent experience/training) in Geographic Information Science, Geography, Agricultural or Natural Resources Science, or related fields.
  • Working knowledge of GIS software, applications programming, database and table structure and design, user interface and experience design and web application development.
  • Strong experience with ESRI software and online tools and platforms.
  • Broad experience using GIS science, software, and data to address a range of use cases including research, planning, evaluation, and communication.
  • Ability to use cartographic skills and techniques to create communication products including printed maps, web maps, and Story Maps.
  • Demonstrated project management skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills in order to work with both technical and non-technical academics and staff across various programs and levels.
  • Experience developing and delivering technical workshops for specific needs and domains.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate operational problems and questions into technical solutions.
  • Ability to communicate technical information in a clear and concise manner with clients and users via technical writing, blog posts, and presentations.
  • Demonstrated strong commitment to customer service, attention to detail and continuous improvement.
  • Knowledge of needs assessment methodology.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Self-motivated, able to learn quickly, meet deadlines, and demonstrate problem solving skills.

Preferred Skills:

  • MA/MS (or equivalent experience/training) in Geography, Geographic Information Science, Data Science, or related fields.
  • Experience conducting needs assessment surveys and developing communication plans.
  • Experience supporting agricultural and natural resources research and extension professionals.
  • Experience using drones and drone data for mapping and research.
  • Experience with programming languages for GIS data analysis, including Python, Jupyter Notebooks, and R.
  • Experience developing custom web applications using html, javascript, and css.

Special Conditions of Employment:

  • Must possess valid California Driver's License to drive a County or University vehicle. Ability and means to travel on a flexible schedule as needed, proof of liability damage insurance on vehicle used is required. Reimbursement of job-related travel will be reimbursed according to University policies.
