Department Description

UC Davis Fleet Services manages a fleet of vehicles for the UC Davis Campus in Northern California that are assigned and travel throughout the nation. There are approximately 870 fleet-owned vehicles with an acquisition value of over $20 million and another 600 department-owned vehicles, carts, and trailers maintained by Fleet Services. These vehicles are available to support teaching, research, administrative programs and all campus support programs.

Job Summary

Under general direction of the Service Manager, position is primarily responsible for the inspection, maintenance, repair and service of heavy-duty vehicles and equipment, but may assist with the maintenance, repair and service of automotive equipment.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Work 8-10 hours standing, bending, stooping, reaching, and walking.
  • Stoop, reach, lift, and maneuver boxes and materials weighing up to 70 pounds. 
  • Must be able to work varying shifts which may include swing, night, and weekends. 
  • Manual dexterity to use hand and power tools and shop equipment. 
  • Work and repair equipment located in cramped areas. Work in awkward positions, including under dashes. 
  • Trace electrical wiring by color. 

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Must possess a valid State of California driver license. Position will participate in DMV Pull Notice Program. Employee is personally responsible for following safety guidelines/procedures.
  • Work hours to be arranged which will be determined by customer and department needs and shift available. Restricted vacation during peak demands. Travel to and attend meetings, trainings, or conferences that may be several days and requiring overnight stays.
  • Work alternate work schedule and overtime to meet deadlines and operational needs with little to no notice.
  • Prior approval from supervisor of vacation with minimum notice of time equivalent to amount of time requested.
  • Proper use of sick leave.
  • This position is subject to completion of a Pre-Placement Medical Exam provided by Employee Health Services at no charge to the applicant.
  • Wear protective clothing and appropriate PPE (i.e., steel-toe shoes, gloves, safety glasses, hearing protection, etc.)
  • Personally provide basic tools to perform job.
  • Work in a loud environment with variable seasonal temperatures both outdoors and indoors. 
  • UC Davis is a smoke and tobacco free campus effective January 1, 2014. Smoking, the use of smokeless tobacco products, and the use of unregulated nicotine products (e-cigarettes) will be strictly prohibited on any UC Davis owned or leased property, indoors and outdoors, including parking lots and residential space.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum License/Certification:

  • Must be able to perform opacity testing and be certified by CCDET (California Council on Diesel Education and Technology) within 6 months of hire.
  • Class A or B California Driver's License with endorsements and no restriction, and the skill to operate tow trucks, refuse trucks, buses, and other large trucks.

Minimum Education/Experience:

  • Experience repairing heavy equipment systems.
  • Experience working in a heavy equipment repair facility OR Completion of UC Davis Career Development Assistant Technician Training.
  • Experience operating and maintaining shop tools and equipment and the skills to use repair manuals and diagnostic technology.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

  • Knowledge of shop safety practices such as the correct use of tools and equipment, as well as safe handling, proper storage, spill cleanup, and disposal of toxic substances.
  • Knowledge of alternative fuels, hybrid, and advanced technology vehicles.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred License/Certification: 

  • CNG certification from Natural Gas Vehicle Institute (NGVI).
  • National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications.

Preferred Education/Experience:   

  • Experience repairing both automotive and heavy-duty equipment systems and facilities.
  • Completion of a formal 4-year Heavy Equipment/Automotive apprenticeship or 2-year Heavy Equipment/Automotive training program with 2 years of work experience.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

  • Skill to weld using GMAW, GTAW, FCAW, SMAW, or oxy-acetylene equipment.
  • Skill to bend, mold, and fabricate metal, plastic, plexiglass, fiberglass, or other materials.
