DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

UC Legal - Office of the General Counsel (UCL) provides legal services to the university, including representation, advice, research and training. We also provide legal opinions to the Board of Regents, administration, faculty, staff and others acting on the university's behalf. We report jointly to the Board of Regents and the president.

POSITION SUMMARY

Under minimal supervision, has a high degree of knowledge in the overall paralegal field and recognized expertise in specific area(s). May manage programs that include formulating strategies and administering policies, processes, and resources; functions with a high degree of autonomy. Develops and oversees the implementation of new programs and processes. Provides guidance and supervision to other paralegal personnel.

Key Responsibilities

60% Assist with document collection, review, and production in connection with external or internal document demands or requests or in connection with security breach incident responses, including:

  • drafting and issuing litigation holds through programs such as Zapproved,
  • using early case assessment, reviewing or supervising document reviews for privilege, responsiveness, “hot documents” and redaction for personal identifying information (including familiarity with privacy rules such as HIPAA, California Public Records Act and California privacy laws),
  • using electronic review platforms such as Logikcull and/or Relativity,
  • drafting document review protocols,
  • supervising technology assisted reviews for responsiveness,
  • identifying methods to improve efficiency and reduce costs,
  • drafting search terms in connection with such reviews, and
  • producing documents according to required specifications (e.g., load file requirements) and formats (e.g., secure file transfer protocol).

Relevant areas may include Health, Litigation, Internal Investigations and Cybersecurity.

25% • Support counsel with transactions in the acquisition, joint ventures process, including tasks such as monitoring and administrating the e-room.

  • Review responses from health organizations as part of the diligence process with summaries to counsel.

10% • Manage databases, litigation templates and brief banks. • Assist the Risk litigation program with various administrative tasks.

5% • Conduct advanced research on legal and policy issues with summaries. • Interact with all levels of University of California staff and external clients in the gathering of information and fact checking.


Experience
Required Qualifications

·         Minimum of 7 years of relevant work experience


Preferred Qualifications

·         Minimum of 4 years of Litigation and/or Health Law


Skills and Abilities
Required Qualifications

·         Thorough knowledge in one or more practice areas.


Preferred Qualifications

·         Thorough knowledge of UC processes, protocols and procedures.

·         Experience in eDiscovery platforms such as Relativity and/or Logikcull

·         Advanced research, analytical / problem-solving skills.

·         Skills to plan and develop data management systems and procedures.

·         Advanced communication and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with all levels of staff and influence, both verbally and in writing.

·         Excellent project management skills.

·         Ability to multi-task with demanding timeframes.

·         Ability to use discretion and maintain all confidentiality.

·         Experience with Requests for Proposals from vendors in the eDiscovery space


Education
Required Qualifications

·         Associate degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training

·         Bachelor's degree in related field and/or Paralegal Certificate


Licenses and Certifications
Preferred Qualifications

  • Paralegal certification preferred.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

This position has been approved for a hybrid work arrangement. A new hire will be required to report to work onsite in Oakland, CA at least 2 days per week (currently Tuesday and Wednesday). Remote candidates residing in or willing to relocate to California may be considered.

SALARY AND BENEFITS

Payscale: $54.12 - $59.87/hour (approximately $113,000 - $125,000 annual), commensurate with experience

Full Salary Range: $85,800 - $158,200

The University of California, Office of the President, is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. The full salary range shows the growth potential for this position and the pay scale is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position.
