The UC Davis KSMP is the umbrella for three primary functions: veterinary student training in shelter medicine and surgery through a two-week clinical rotation; administration of a state-funded grants program to CA shelters; and outreach to shelters including consulting services and online training for shelter leaders, veterinarians, and staff. The Associate Director will oversee the outreach functions of the program and will ensure activities are coordinated with other programmatic activities. The selected candidate will work with direct reports to develop and track team-centered and mission-oriented goals and will also engage directly in shelter consultations and training programs in alignment with their area of expertise within shelter medicine. Working with the Director, the AD will develop and implement strategies to increase Access to Care in shelters, including establishing partnerships within UC Davis and externally to build the effectiveness, engagement, and satisfaction of shelter medical teams.


Job Summary

Under general direction serves a key strategic and leadership role in the Koret Shelter Medicine Program. The AD will oversee all shelter outreach and continued education programs of the KSMP and will participate in shelter consultations, outreach, and teaching related to shelter medicine and high quality/high volume surgery. In partnership with the program director, the AD will lead efforts to expand KSMP's role in increasing Access to Care in shelters in CA and nationally and identify future directions and funding streams for the program.

RECRUITMENT PERIOD ONE MONTH: Applicants will be screened after two weeks; and then on a weekly basis. The position can be filled prior to the removal date.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum License/Certification:

  • Licensed Veterinarian.

Minimum Education/Experience:

  • A Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree with current licensure.
  • Proven leadership experience in veterinary medicine, preferably in a shelter or animal welfare setting.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

  • Strong organizational and strategic planning skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain effective partnerships.
  • Commitment to the welfare of animals and passion for improving access to veterinary care.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred Education/Experience:    

  • Fellowship or residency trained and/or board certified in Shelter Medicine or a closely related discipline.
  • Experience and knowledge of animal shelter trends.
  • Familiarity with organizational change management theories and experience implementing change on an organizational level.
  • Experience developing materials for and training or teaching adult learners.
  • Facility management experience/interest.
  • Building knowledge or hands on experience.
