Description

The Wake Forest University School of Medicine (WFUSOM) seeks the next Chair for the Department of Neurosurgery, who will be responsible for developing strategies to advance the clinical, research, education, and diversity missions of the Department, while also contributing to a unique School of Medicine that serves as the academic core for the largest academic learning health system in the nation, Advocate Health. WFUSOM is now establishing one of the only multi-campus privately funded top-50 schools of medicine in the nation. Two campuses in North Carolina, one in Winston-Salem and one in Charlotte, are training medical students, residents, other biomedical trainees and conducting research in all scientific areas (basic, translational, clinical, and population-based studies). In addition, the school has a growing footprint, as it serves as the anchor for the academic core of Advocate Health. Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist is the $5.7 billion pre-eminent academic health system based in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, where this Chair of Neurosurgery will primarily be located.

Reporting to newly appointed leadership – Dr. L. Ebony Boulware, Dean of the Wake Forest University School of Medicine and Chief Science Officer and Vice Chief Academic Officer, Advocate Health, and Dr. David Zaas, President of Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist, the next Chair of Neurosurgery will serve as a visible, committed, and inspiring leader and will provide strategic leadership and direction for all aspects of the Department with responsibility for the research, education, and clinical missions. The next Chair of Neurosurgery will build on the success of prior leadership, while defining the future culture of the Department, leveraging the talents of a diverse group of 14 faculty members, 15 residents, staff, and students as the medical school and health system enter a period of unprecedented growth. The candidate will also demonstrate a commitment to promoting an academic and clinical culture that prizes health equity for communities served by WFUSOM and a commitment to providing a just, equitable, diverse, and inclusive environment for all members, trainees, and affiliates of the Department. As such, we are seeking a nationally recognized, master neurosurgeon and academician with a track record of faculty leadership and achievements across the tripartite mission.

This modern Chair of Neurosurgery will be charged with developing, scaling, and innovating the Department's research and education programs, while optimizing care delivery and clinical operations in an increasingly complex environment. The new Chair for the Winston-Salem market will work closely with high-performing surgical leaders, faculty, and staff to embrace the many strengths of this Department, while further elevating the national, academic profile of this program and articulating a contemporary vision for this program. This individual will work collaboratively across a School of Medicine with two campuses, while promoting enterprise-wide strategic objectives and embodying a new vision for “One School, One Mission, Growing Community, Global Impact.”

As the academic anchor for Advocate Health, the Chair will impact care delivery across the system's multi-state geography, requiring collaboration and leadership. This growing Department has an expanding footprint across Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist, seeing nearly 2,500 OR cases in FY FY23, and is part of national Neuroscience service line. With funds from extramural sponsors in addition to robust internal support, the Department's faculty actively seek to advance understanding of a variety of conditions in the pursuit of new avenues for therapy and treatment

The successful candidate will be a master neurosurgeon with administrative leadership and faculty management experience, in addition to a demonstrated track record of achievement commensurate with appointment to the faculty at the rank of Full Professor in the WFUSOM. The ideal candidate will demonstrate exemplary clinical, research and academic achievements, strategic leadership ability, strong interpersonal and communication skills, an entrepreneurial spirit, and active engagement in the field of neurosurgery on a national level.
