  Public Information Officer-Assistant Director
Position open until filled, applications reviewed starting 5/3/2024
Salary:  $107,727 to $114, 728 DOE (for 260 day contract)    
The Mat-Su Borough School District:
The MSBSD is a wonderful place to live work and play!  We are located approximately 40 miles north of Anchorage and are the second largest school district in the state of Alaska, home to more than 100,000 residents.  The Mat-Su Borough spans over 25,000 square miles of lakes, rivers, glaciers, and mountain, including America's largest peak, Mt. Denali.  The School District serves approximately 19,000 students located at 49 school sites ranging in enrollments from 30 to 2,500 students.
 
Class Summary:
The Assistant Director-Public Information Officer oversees and directs all District communications, ensuring factual, timely, and accurate information to various stakeholder groups. Promotes effective communication between the district and the community. Position reports directly to the Superintendent.
 
Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree in Communication, Public Relations, Journalism or related field of study. Five (5) years experience in a public relations environment, preferably in a K-12 public school district.
  • Sedentary Work:  Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to life, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body.  Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time.  Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally, and all other sedentary criteria are met.
Essential Functions of the Position:
  • Develops, facilitate and evaluates the District's communication plan.
  • Works with administrative staff in generating communication materials on issues critical to the district and its mission.
  • Serves as the District's spokesperson and liaison for all media inquiries (print, radio, social media, and television) or for media releases initiated by the District. Ensures positive public relations and relationship building necessary for community trust and understanding.
  • Develop, write and edit key messages for District Administrators for dissemination to various internal and external audiences through a range of effective print and electronic vehicles.
  • Assists, participates, and/or facilitates District committees, providing overview of communication considerations and relaying relevant information to interested stakeholders using appropriate media formats.
  • Monitors state and federal legislation, corresponds with legislators and organizes legislative briefings.
  • Maintain membership in civic organizations as a means for gathering data and engaging in discussion likely to affect K-12 education funding initiatives. Communicates District viewpoints and influences support for its mission and goals.
  • Member of District Crisis Response Team, responding to life and death crisis situations. Assists in planning, communication, training, and follow-through strategies for recovery. Provides media relations assistance to sites: letters, scripts, and other media strategies.
  • Conducts media relations training to District Administrators/stakeholders, emphasizing customer service, crisis, and public relations, as well as marketing for schools.
  • Other duties as assigned
