About the Role:

The Land Management Specialist will be responsible for overseeing the acquisition of land for mining and industrial operations in Juruti, Poços de Caldas, and Alumar (São Luís). This role involves strategic planning, negotiation, and coordination with various stakeholders to ensure the successful procurement of land while adhering to environmental, health, and safety regulations and strategies. Additionally, this role will follow global guidelines and standards from the Global Sustainability organization on land management and the internal standards related to land acquisition.

Well-managed land acquisition and/or resettlement, when unavoidable, will help Operations maintain stakeholder relationships and their social license to operate, protect the human rights of communities, and avoid reputational damage.

  • Acquisition Plan: Lead and develop a short-, medium- and long-term land acquisition plan considering the mining and industrial necessities to keep the operational performance and expansion plans in the pipeline. Green and protected areas should be necessary for compensation process.

  • Land Acquisition: Identify and evaluate potential land parcels for mining and industrial operations.

  • Negotiate purchase agreements and manage the acquisition process to ensure timely and cost-effective procurement for land access, purchase, lease, or easement agreements. Ensure all agreements are legally sound, ethically negotiated, and properly documented.

  • Stakeholder Engagement: In cooperation with Social Performance and Public Affairs, collaborate with local communities, government agencies, and other stakeholders to address concerns and ensure transparent communication throughout the land acquisition process.

  • International Regulation: Extensively knowledge and experience to implement international regulation during land acquisition process, such as, ASI Requirement 9.6 – Resettlement; ASI Requirement 9.7 - Local Communities; IFC PS5 – Land Acquisition and Involuntary Resettlement; IFC PS1 - Assessment and Management of Environmental and Social Risks and Impacts; ICMM Principle 3.2.

  • Regulatory Compliance: Ensure all land acquisitions comply with relevant environmental, health, and safety regulations. Maintain up-to-date knowledge of local and national land use laws and mining and industrial regulations, following applicable legislation and Alcoa's Land Acquisition, Resettlement and Influx Management Standard, the Indigenous and Land Connected People Standard and the Human Rights Management Standard.

  • Environmental Stewardship: Work closely with the EHS team to assess environmental impacts of land acquisitions and develop strategies to mitigate negative effects. Implement land rehabilitation plans as needed.

  • Documentation and Reporting: Maintain accurate records of all land transactions and provide regular reports to the Director of EHS. Evidence and records of the negotiation process (step by step), bringing transparency and accountability for this position, reporting the on-track negotiation to Director and, in some cases even, to the Board. Ensure all documentation is compliant with company policies and legal requirements.

  • Management of georeferenced information systems: Work closely with the spatial data team  to implement digital solutions for real-time monitoring and management of the company's land resources in the country.

  • Risk Management: Identify potential risks associated with land acquisitions and develop mitigation strategies. Monitor ongoing land use to ensure compliance with agreements and regulations.

  • Budget Management: Develop and manage budgets for land acquisition projects. Ensure cost-effective use of resources while achieving project goals. Lead indirect surveys in interested or surrounding areas for a previous assessment considering mapping high prices risks.

What you can bring to this role:

  • Bachelor's degree in Land Management, Environmental Science, Business Administration, or a related field.

  • Experience in land acquisition, preferably in the mining industry.

  • Strong negotiation and communication skills.

  • Ability to assimilate and analyze information from various sources to solve complex
    processes.

  • Demonstrated ability to work with communities, regulators, consultants and other third-
    party organizations involved on the acquisition process.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and demonstrated experience
    developing positive and effective working relationships.

  • Knowledge of environmental, health, and safety, and human rights regulations related to land use and mining operations.

  • Excellent organizational and project management skills.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and land management software.

  • Extensive and in-depth knowledge about the Land Acquisition, Resettlement and Influx of
    Brazilian Legislation and international best practice and regulation

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working in Juruti, Poços de Caldas, and São Luis locations.

  • Familiarity with local land use laws and regulations.

  • Certification in land management or related field.

  • Demonstrated experience in collaborating and motivating others, including multi-
    disciplinary teams.

  • Effective communication skills and an ability to thrive in diverse work environments whilst
    building positive and collaborative relationships and partnerships.
