About the Role:

  • Conduct laboratory/bench-scale experiments relating to molten salts, electrolysis, electrochemistry, or gas emissions.

  • Support and preform special sampling/measurement campaigns at Alcoa's global smelting facilities.

  • Conduct detailed analysis of plant process data and research data.

  • Support and initiate projects related to aluminum smelting, independently or in collaboration with OE-CoE technical staff, smelter technical staff and engineers, and external resources.

  • Assist with data collection, sampling, and reporting for emission measurement campaigns at smelters to check air quality and ensure compliance with environmental standards. 

  • Sustain and calibrate analytical equipment in preparation for plant studies.

  • Organize round-robin sample collection and analysis to support smelting operations.

  • Maintain existing lab equipment and lead installation and training on any new equipment.

  • This position will require working safely around a range of hazards including molten materials, compressed gases, acids, electricity, magnetic fields, and high temperatures. Work at times may require the need to wear personal protective equipment such as a respirator.

What you can bring to this role:

  • Master degree in Chemical Engineering, Electrochemistry, Chemistry, Materials Science, metallurgy, or in a related field. Ph.D. preferred but not required.

  • 0 – 2 years of industrial experience

  • Ability to work safely both in laboratory and industrial settings.

  • Strong skills in conducting hands-on experiments either in a laboratory or plant environment.

  • Hands-on experience with laboratory equipment such as SEM, XRF, XRD, TGA/DSC, GC-MS, FTIR, laser-based gas analysis, electrochemical workstations

  • Ability to speak second a language such as French or Norwegian is a plus, but not required.

  • Role is intended to participate in on-site laboratory activities, remote work may occasionally be possible.

  • Must be able to travel up to 25% internationally.

  • Ability to crouch, kneel, stoop, and lift 50 lbs.
