Application Software Optimization Engineer, Fortran

 

THE ROLE:
Would you like to be part of a world class team enabling applications for the world's mightiest supercomputers? AMD is searching for talented and highly motivated computational scientists/engineers to join our team of developers preparing applications for HPC platforms across industry, academia, and national laboratories.

This position is for a mid-level application optimization engineer in high performance computing. You will be part of a team porting and tuning a wide variety of scientific applications for AMD CPU and GPU platforms, with an emphasis on Fortran applications.

 

THE PERSON:
A computational scientist, physicist, or engineer with experience in multiple scientific computing domains and a track record of collaborating with others on applications and libraries widely used by the scientific computing community, especially programs written in Fortran. Must be self- motivated and possess the ability to work well within a team environment.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Participate in Fortran ecosystem development by porting and testing Fortran based

    applications to run with various compilers targeting AMD accelerators

  • Apply Fortran language expertise by participating in standards development,

    implementation, testing, and documentation

  • Understand implications of Fortran and OpenMP standards and their implementations, and apply this knowledge to create correct and performant Fortran programs

  • Interact with compiler development teams to diagnose and resolve correctness and performance issues

  • Provide Fortran and GPU offloading standards knowledge to other groups at AMD

  • Develop and present training materials to internal audiences, at customer venues, and at industry conferences

 

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Extensive experience with modern Fortran and C++

  • Participation in Fortran language standards committees and standard benchmarking

    efforts

  • Strong profiling and performance analysis skills for both CPU and GPU

  • Experience in implementing and optimizing parallel methods on GPU accelerators in

    distributed memory systems with MPI, CUDA, HIP, OpenMP, etc.

  • Broad experience creating, adapting, and running workloads with widely used HPC

    applications.

  • Knowledge of multiple scientific computing disciplines such as finite element analysis,

    computational chemistry, fluid dynamics, weather modeling, and oil and gas applications

  • Familiarity with installation and setup of various HPC applications

  • Experience with build system tools including Make, CMake, autoconf, and autotools

  • In-depth knowledge of software development practices including debug, test, revision

    control, documentation, and bug tracking

  • Strong team development skills including demonstrated expertise with git and Jira

  • Excellent customer support skills

  • Ability to work well in geographically dispersed teams

     

 

ACADEMIC CREDENTIALS:

  • Masters or PhD in Computer Science, Computational Physics, Engineering or related subjects, or equivalent experience

  • At least 5 years of relevant industry experience
