The Controller is responsible for being the Chief Accounting Officer of the Company and for owning the development and execution of the accounting theories and practices in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and SEC regulations.  The incumbent will also focus on initiatives to improve underlying business unit accounting and management reporting, additionally partnering with business unit leaders and financial resources on various operational improvement initiatives.  Additionally, the position will support the AIT Finance organizations' continuous improvement initiatives implementing and maintaining processes and tools focused on enhancing controls and consistency in process, reducing costs, and improving cycle time.

Responsible for the direction and administration of the Company's accounting functions and SOX compliance activities. These functions include establishing and maintaining the organization's accounting principles, practices, procedures, and initiatives.

 

Duties Include:

  • Prepares financial reports and presents findings and recommendations to top management.
  • Coordinate activities of and interface with external auditors.
  • Responsible for procedures to ensure that transactions are executed in accordance with general or specific authorization.  Maintain accurate, complete and timely records of business transactions.
  • Prepare company policies and procedures for accounting/finance related areas.
    • Consolidation activities
    • LIFO accounting
    • Goodwill/intangible assets accounting and annual impairment analysis
    • Self-insurance reserves accounting
    • Revenue recognition accounting
    • Share-based compensation accounting
    • Comprehensive Income accounting
    • EPS calculation/accounting
    • Defined benefit plan accounting.
  • Prepare monthly financial statements and reporting package.
  • Prepare 10Q, 10K and other related SEC filings applying an extensive knowledge of GAAP and SEC regulations to insure Applied's financial statements are in compliance.
  • Establishing and maintaining a robust internal control environment in order to comply with SOX
  • Have direct involvement/oversight of all day-to-day accounting activities for Applied's SAP system-based companies in a shared services environment (approx. 65% of total sales).  This includes inventory accounting/activity and inter/intra company activity/accounting.
  • Overall responsibility for income tax accounting
  • Overall responsibility for all reserves, including allowance for doubtful accounts and excess/obsolete inventory
  • Preparation and monitoring of annual operating budget.
    • Participate in formulating and successfully implementing goals and objectives.
    • Hire, train and develop associates following company standards and policies.  Conduct associate performance reviews regularly, establish individual goals and ensure completion of relevant training.
  • Lead M&A due diligence, financial integration and goodwill accounting.

 

The successful candidate will have a bachelor's degree in Accounting.  They will possess a minimum of 15 years of progressive accounting/financial leadership experience with five plus years at a senior level within an SEC-reporting entity.   He/she will have expert understanding of accounting, financial and SOX compliance issues facing companies and how these issues affect company policies, programs and strategies.   They should be business savvy with the ability to quickly gain an understanding of Applied's business, strategy, customers and market.  Demonstrated experience and background in leadership development as well as a proven ability to attract and retain outstanding talent and assemble a motivated high-performance team.  They should be energetic, down to earth and forward thinking with high ethical standards and the appropriate professional demeanor and presence.  Prior Public Accounting experience and being a CPA is preferred.
