Summary of Position:
The Director of Patient Safety and Quality provides oversight to reporting departments while managing the organizational Patient Safety Program. The Director ensures compliance with mandatory reporting to local, state, federal, and regulatory agencies, including Adverse/Sentinel Events. The Director utilizes evidence-based models for program development and oversees and ensures compliance with regulatory requirements. The Director oversees reporting department budgets to ensure alignment with organizational goals. This position requires a compassionate professional with a performance improvement background, strong organization and communication skills, and who thrives in a challenging, fast-paced environment.
Qualifications
Education:
- Completion of an accredited nursing program required
- Bachelor's degree in a healthcare related field required; Master's degree preferred
Experience:
- Minimum of five years of professional level, or greater, healthcare experience required
- Minimum of five year's experience in performance improvement programs
- Previous supervisory/management experience preferred
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
- Demonstrated knowledge of governmental and other regulatory standards, requirements, and guidelines related to quality improvement including, but not limited to, Joint Commission, CMS Conditions of Participation, Title 22, Cal-OSHA, HIPAA, PSQIA, PSOs, and Medi-Cal and Medicare regulations and standards
- Analytical skills, including a working knowledge of basic statistics and statistical analysis methodologies, especially as they pertain to healthcare
- In compliance with patient safety standards, must be able to effectively communicate in English; Bilingual abilities preferred
- Proficiency in computer skills and relevant software
- Strong presentation skills; advanced critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills; and leadership qualities
Certifications/Licensure:
- Current California and Nevada RN or ability to obtain prior to start date
- CPHQ orCPPS preferred
- TeamSTEPPS Master Trainer certification preferred
- Lean Six Sigma certification preferred
- Current CPR/BLS certification by the American Heart Association (BLS for the Healthcare Provider) or proof of enrollment in an upcoming course

Essential Functions
- Provides consistently exceptional care at all times.
- Provides oversight to the patient safety and quality departments. Supports department leaders in providing safe, high-quality care aligned with evidence-based practices.
- Ensures organizational and department objectives are aligned with Barton's vision, mission, and service standards and goals are met; provides financial and operational expertise. Responsible for ensuring high-performance and efficient practices among reporting teams.
- Manages and develops the organizational Patient Safety Program. Develops and executes the organizational Patient Safety Plan. Provides leadership through collaboration to develop and sustain a culture of safety. Oversees Patient Safety related compliance through review of organizational documents, data, and patient record audits. Collaboratively develops and supervises corrective action when deficiencies are identified.
- Ensures compliance with mandatory reporting to local, state, federal, and regulatory agencies, including serious safety events (Adverse/Sentinel Events). Supervises serious safety event reporting process from submission through case closure with reported agency.
- Serves as a facilitator, educator, and resource for leadership and staff related to evidence-based practice for the patient safety, quality, infection prevention, and population health teams.
- Facilitates the organizational-wide TeamSTEPPS program. Oversees initiatives to integrate and engage all staff in high-reliability programming, including oversight of the organizational daily safety brief.
- Facilitates performance improvement (PI) activities, goals, objectives, implementation strategies, and monitoring. Organizes and oversees department projects utilizing PDSA or other evidence-based tools. Educates staff in PI methodology and promotes participation by all staff. Ensures department reporting activities reflect professional standards.
- Provides oversight of and ensures compliance with regulatory requirements, surveys, culture of safety surveys, and third-party surveys. Engages in interprofessional collaboration when deficiencies and opportunities are identified to ensure resolution strategies are successfully implemented and sustained.
- Consults with Board Members, Executive Team, Directors, Medical Staff, and staff members on best practices, evidence-based innovations, and programs to achieve and sustain a strong culture of safety and high-quality care across the healthcare system.
- Works directly with leadership on quality and patient safety initiatives; and provides data and reports when needed.
- Manages and supports a non-punitive error reporting culture.
- Provides oversight of and serves as the primary owner of the electronic event reporting system.
- Provides supportive and compassionate leadership and supervision to all direct reports. Supports staff when dealing with conflicts involving other disciplines and services. Engages and collaborates with employees. Responds to staff requests in a timely manner.
- Engages in interprofessional collaboration with leaders and other department teams to promote organizational goals.
- Participates in and/or chairs committees, workgroups, and meetings as required. Represents the healthcare organization in professional organizations.
- Models professional communication, conflict resolution, consultation, negotiation, coaching, mentoring, and support to direct reports, colleagues, providers, staff, and other disciplines and departments. Serves as a role model in professional, problem-solving, and interpersonal leadership skills.
- Maintains professional growth and development, supports and promotes education and research among assigned departments, and serves as a role model for evidence-based practice within the organization.
