Position Summary  

The Assistant Director of International Student Advising and Engagement (ADISAE) reports to the Director of International Education and supervises full-time International Student Advisors and International Student Engagement Program Manager. This position is responsible for improving international students' retention by developing and implementing comprehensive academic, immigration advising and culturally responsive support services with goals to increase student completion and satisfaction rates. 

The position serves as the Principal Designated School Official (PDSO) and is responsible for ensuring full compliance with all aspects of the F-1 regulations, reporting, and updating all reportable events in a timely manner in the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) including I-17, preparing for recertification process to maintain college's approval status. The ADISAE supports the director in managing department operations, designing, implementing, and evaluating high impact programming and support services for international students. 

The ADISAE is expected to serve as additional support to assist students and the general public without appointments in-person during the International Education's (IE) office hours. The position requires to work occasional evening and weekends to oversee student engagement activities and as directed by the director.

Pay, Benefits & Work Schedule  

Position Salary Range: $67,669 /year - $94,737 /year

The salary information shown above is a general guideline only. The salary will be determined based on candidate's qualifications and related experience, as well as market and business considerations. Typically, new hires start no higher than $74,436 based on Bellevue College Exempt salary schedule.

The employee is scheduled to work 40 hours per workweek. This position may be eligible for the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act; salaries below the WA State Salary Threshold is eligible for overtime pay.

About the Department  

International Education (IE) provides primary support for students on F-1, J-1, and some other non-immigrant visas who plan to enroll in college-credit classes, International High School Completion (IHSC), Bridge Pathway, International Business Professions (IBP), Intensive English, and short-term customized programs. IE services include international marketing and recruitment, admissions, advising (academic, F-1 visa regulations, and cultural), class enrollment, accident and sickness medical benefit matters, student engagement, and housing referrals. IE works with on and off-campus partners to develop and deliver international student programs that support student success, retention, and program completion. In addition, IE acts as a liaison between Bellevue College international students, faculty, administrators, and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

Essential Functions  

International Advising and Engagement Management 

  • International Student Advising: 
  • Maximize students' access to advisors by offering walk-in advising sessions, ensuring adequate staffing, and reviewing caseloads. 
  • Conform to the College's Academic Standing procedures by updating department specific academic intervention requirements and ensuring advisors follow up with the students in a timely manner to apply appropriate intervention. 
  • Act as a back-up to update I-20 and ctcLink data for students changing education level. 
  • Coordinate and facilitate the quarterly new student orientation. 
  • In consultation with the Director of IE, update and document internal procedures relative to advising and engagement as well as the duties performed by the Principal Designated School Official (PDSO) and the Designated School Officials' (DSOs).  
  • Create communication plans and contents to send to students in preparation of enrollment/payment related activities. 
  • Provide updated advising and immigration content for the IE website. 
  • Act as a back-up advisor and International Student Engagement when direct-reports are on leave or assist students needing urgent or unscheduled advising assistance. 
  • International Student Engagement: 
  • Train the International Student Engagement Program Manager with developing cost estimates for quarterly IE-led student activities, ensuring timely fee-collections and refunds, and monitoring allotted budget for the Global Leaders' annual wages.  
  • Ensure all activities are conducted in a safely manner following the college's policies and procedures. 
  • Serve as an overall supervisor for the department-led annual events such as International Education Week (IEW) and International Night.  
  • Provide updated contents under the “Current Students” and “Housing” sites on IE's website.
  • System and Data Management:
  • In collaboration with the IE's data specialist, work with Terra Dotta (TD) and/or BC ITS to maximize the product functionality such as batch system.
  • Increase accuracy of data shared among critical systems including Terra Dotta, ctcLink, Target X and SEVIS. 

Leadership & Supervising the IE Advising and Engagement Team 

  • Supervise full-time classified staff. Manage work schedules, approve/deny leave requests, hold regular check-ins, identify training needs, and conduct annual performance evaluations. 
  • Working closely with the director to set clear retention initiatives, benchmark, and measurements to support the department's goals. Track and share progress report regularly. 
  • Working with the director, identify and facilitate collaboration with internal and external partners to ensure IE services are in alignment with the regulations. 
  • Set expectations and train the International Student Engagement Program Manager (ISEPM) to lead the Global Leaders (GLs) program and GL-led activities. 
  • Lead the advising and engagement team meeting, post meeting minutes in the IE SharePoint.
  • Attend the IE management team meeting and bring issues and ideas from the Advising and Engagement team for consideration and implementation. 

CARE Team & Early Alerts

  • Represent the department in the CARE team and follow up on cases involving international students. 
  • Monitor Early Alerts daily and assign advisors to follow up as needed.  

Principal Designated School Official (PDSO)

  • Perform all PDSO duties such as updating I-17, completing the recertification in a timely manner, and perform PDSO-specific corrections. 
  • Stay current with regulatory updates and make recommendations on adjusting IE services as needed.

Other

  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications  
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution; relevant years of experience can be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
  • Five (5) years of Designated School Official (DSO) experience preferably at higher education setting
  • Two (2) years of academic advising experience at a higher education in the USA. 
  • One (1) year experience in supervising student clubs or affinity group. 
  • Demonstrated ability to attention to details, strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to write and speak persuasively in business settings.  
  • Ability to remain organized and productive in a fast-paced environment with frequent interruptions. 
  • Proficient in MS Suite and ability to learn new programs.  
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or a permanent resident to serve a Designated School Official. 
  • Ability to work on-campus at least 4 days a week and occasional evenings and weekends.
Preferred Qualifications  
  • Master's degree from an accredited institution.
  • Two (2) years of supervisory experience of professional staff including hiring, training, and conducting performance evaluation.
  • Three (3) years of Principal Designated School Official (PDSO) experience in the last ten years preferably at higher education setting. 
  • Experience with Terra Dotta, PeopleSoft (ctcLink), and Salesforce (Target X)
