Position Summary  

The Associate Dean, Student Equity & Success reports to the Dean of Student Support and is responsible for developing and maintaining programs that meet the needs of a very diverse student population, while encouraging excellence and innovation in education. The Associate Dean provides administrative oversight for Multicultural Services, Veteran's Resource Center, and TRiO Student Support Services in providing support, programs, services and activities for diverse student populations. This position will lead in the design and implementation of the equity plan and framework ensuring a seamless onboarding experience and equitable academic support to disproportionally impacted students.

Pay, Benefits & Work Schedule  

Position Salary Range: $100,673/year - $145,976/year

The salary information shown above is a general guideline only. The salary will be determined based on candidate's qualifications and related experience, as well as market and business considerations. Typically, new hire starts no higher than $111,999/year based on Bellevue College Exempt salary schedule.

The employee is scheduled to work 40 hours per workweek. This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act, which means that you are not eligible for overtime pay.

About the Department  

The Associate Dean of Equity and Student Success is part of the Student Support unit within Student Affairs. This unit includes Academic Advising, Counseling, Student Success and Retention, Benefits Hub, Workforce Education Program, and Disability Resource Center. The Associate Dean will lead a team within Student Support to engage specific student populations. This includes identity-based programs include TRIO Student Support Services, Umoja Scholars Program, Puente Scholars Program, LGBTQ+ Resource Center, and Veterans' Services. The goal of these programs is to close the equity gap, improve student retention and completion, and help students overcome social, economic, and systemic barriers. 

Essential Functions  

Strategic Planning & Assessment

  • Provide leadership in the development and implementation of the Bellevue College Student Equity Strategic Plan, ensuring equity-best practices are applied throughout design, implementation, evaluation and assessment processes.
  • Work collaboratively with the Dean of Student Support and Vice President of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion to facilitate assessment, planning, and evaluation efforts to mitigate identified disparities.
  • Support the campus community, including college leadership, in developing an understanding of equity and student success goals and initiatives; build support for college-wide efforts to eliminate equity gaps, increase student success, and identify and mitigate organizational/structural biases.
  • Devise and monitor annual systems of evaluation that measure equity and success, report evaluative results regularly to the Dean of Student Support, and employ strategies for continuous improvement.
  • Plan and develop outreach programs. Determine outreach needs and make appropriate personnel referrals and follow-up arrangements with relevant service agencies and local high school contacts. Encourage underrepresented and disadvantaged students to enroll in appropriate educational programs.

Supervision

  • Supervise Directors and Program Leads within the Student Equity Unit, including, but not limited to, Veteran's Resource Center, TRIO Student Support Services and Multicultural Services. 
  • Lead, train, supervise, evaluate, and provide information to staff to enhance their ability to accomplish the unit's objectives, vision, and mission.
  • Ensure cross-department coordination of services to support students. 

Grant Writing/Budget Management

  • In partnership with the Dean of Student Support, work with members of Grant Development to promote grant-writing, development and with Institutional Advancement to identify fundraising activities specifically to enhance efforts in equity, student success, and completion.  Assist in the development of grant proposals. 
  • Monitor project budgets to assure expenditures comply with established budgetary procedures; analyze and review budgetary and financial data; control and authorize expenditures in accordance with regulations.

Collaboration

  • Actively collaborate with staff, administration and faculty to support the infusion of culturally relevant pedagogy and practices into student programs and services (e.g. Umoja and Puente).
  • Research and develop new programs and offerings in response to best practices and staff/faculty collaboration.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications  
  • Master's degree in Student Affairs, Psychology, Social Work, Business Administration or relevant related degrees. Any combination of relevant education and/or experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.
  • A minimum of three (3) years of full-time instructional, student, and/or support services experience in an institution of higher education.
  • A minimum of two (2) or more years' experience supervising and leading a team and demonstrated effective leadership skills.
  • Documented, successful experiences in implementing equity-focused programs and student support services in a higher education setting.
  • Proven experience in implementing programmatic efforts targeted at under-represented and under-served student groups.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and cooperatively with diverse constituencies.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Experience working in a collaborative team environment with diverse employees and student/customer groups.
  • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook, Teams and OneNote (Office Suite).

  • Understanding of the educational role and philosophy of the open enrollment (community) college.
Preferred Qualifications  
  • At least two (2) years of experience in grant writing and/or grant management.
  • Demonstrated experience conducting programmatic or student success assessments, including the design, implementation, and data evaluation.
  • Experiencing writing and/or developing strategic plans.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and cooperatively within a participatory governance environment.
