Position Summary  

The Graphic Design instructor is entrusted with delivering a top-tier educational experience for graphic design courses. Key duties encompass the regular updating of the curriculum, creation of dynamic courses, and provision of student support, both in group settings and one-on-one. Candidates must hold a Bachelor's degree in graphic design, visual communication, or a related field, and demonstrated in-depth knowledge of graphic design principles and software such as Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign), and other relevant tools. Experience in graphic design and a portfolio that showcases the instructor's graphic design skills and projects is essential. Candidates with a Master's degree in graphic design, visual communication, or a related field, teaching certifications or relevant educational training, and teaching experience in a college or continuing education setting will be given preference.

Pay, Benefits & Work Schedule  

Adjunct Professor is typically assigned as needed on a quarterly basis, with no expectation of continued employment beyond the current appointment. 

Compensation is $40.41 - $80.00 per hour. Individuals newly hired to Adjunct Professor group at the college are placed at the minimum rate per union bargaining agreement. Certain positions may also be eligible for assignment/project-based additional compensation, including a High Demand Stipend up to $8,350 annually, prorated based on the discipline and duration of the assignment. All additional compensations are subject to change depending on funding and negotiated agreement.

Generous benefits package for eligible employees is offered through Washington State plans that includes multiple medical, dental, life and disability coverage choices for employees and dependents; choices of retirement and deferred compensation plans; paid personal leave plan; transit program, reduced tuition, employee discounts and memberships, etc. Eligible employees are faculty who work a combined load of at least 50% at Bellevue College and other Washington State public institutions of higher education for two consecutive quarters are eligible for health and dental insurance at the start of the second consecutive quarter. 

In addition to teaching, faculty maintains office hours and may participate in department and college activities. This position is represented by the Bellevue College Association of Higher Education (BCAHE) union.

Are you passionate about graphic design and have a knack for developing engaging and effective learning materials? Do you possess a strong understanding of graphic design principles and practices and in-depth knowledge of the fundamentals and applications of graphic design, such as typography, layout, color theory, branding, and digital media? If so, we invite you to join our team as an Instructor for our graphic design courses.

Essential Functions  
  • Update and maintain the curriculum for graphic design courses including:
    • Basic principles of design, such as color theory, typography, layout, and composition.
    • Print design, UX/UI design, digital illustration, web design, and motion graphics.
    • Graphic design evolution, styles, and movements.
    • Industry-standard software tools, such as Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign), CorelDRAW, Sketch, Figma, and other relevant software.
    • Branding, identity, and logo design.
    • Business aspects of the graphic design industry such as freelancing, entrepreneurship, copyright law, project management, and marketing.
  • Develop engaging courses, lesson plans, teaching aids, assessments, and hands-on exercises.
  • Meet all scheduled classes promptly with any deviation being filed promptly and accurately through the appropriate channels.
  • Motivate students to actively participate in all aspects of the educational process.
  • Provide one-on-one and group mentoring to support students in their learning journey.
  • Address student questions and provide guidance on courses' content.
  • Maintain expertise in subject area and ensure curriculum content remains up-to-date and relevant by staying updated on the latest trends and developments in the graphic design industry and incorporating them into the course content and activities.
  • Participate in departmental and college meetings as prescribed by supervisor.
Minimum Qualifications  
  • A bachelor's degree in graphic design, visual communication, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated in-depth knowledge of graphic design principles and software such as Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign), and other relevant tools.
  • Prior experience in graphic design and a portfolio that showcases the instructor's graphic design skills and projects.
  • Demonstrated communication and presentation skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to facilitate learning of students/colleagues from diverse backgrounds.
Preferred Qualifications  
  • Master's degree in graphic design, visual communication, or a related field.
  • Previous teaching experience in a college or continuing education setting.
  • Familiarity with instructional technology and e-learning platforms.
  • Experience in developing online course materials and curriculum design.
  • Demonstrated ability to coach, mentor, and inspire learners at different levels of experience.
