Position Summary  

Teach advanced, upper-division studio courses to third-year Interior Design program students. Must instruct students in contemporary studio practices and processes and have experience teaching or directing others in professional practices, methodologies, skills, and content related to commercial interior project types. The instructor will maintain current expertise in at least one area of interior design practice, and create an active learning, project-based curriculum for students based on their area of expertise. Instruction will include industry standard technology and tools, interior building codes and systems, visual communication methods, design programming, project management, and various methods of design inquiry. The instructor will create a quarter-long project that gives students opportunities to further their programming, space planning, schematic design, visualization, presentation, and other career success abilities. Pay, Benefits & Work Schedule  

Adjunct Professor is typically assigned as needed on a quarterly basis, with no expectation of continued employment beyond the current appointment. 

Quarterly remuneration for 5-credit lecture class is $5,716.52 - $6,968.62. Compensation is prorated based on type and duration of assignments. Individuals newly hired to Adjunct Professor group at the college are placed at the minimum rate per union bargaining agreement. Certain positions may also be eligible for assignment/project-based additional compensation, including a High Demand Stipend up to $8,350 annually, prorated based on the discipline and duration of the assignment. All additional compensations are subject to change depending on funding and negotiated agreement. Projected end date for this position is June 26, 2023. 

Generous benefits package for eligible employees is offered through Washington State plans that includes multiple medical, dental, life and disability coverage choices for employees and dependents; choices of retirement and deferred compensation plans; paid personal leave plan; transit program, reduced tuition, employee discounts and memberships, etc. Eligible employees are faculty who work a combined load of at least 50% at Bellevue College and other Washington State public institutions of higher education for two consecutive quarters are eligible for health and dental insurance at the start of the second consecutive quarter. 

In addition to teaching, faculty maintains office hours and may participate in department and college activities. This position is represented by the Bellevue College Association of Higher Education (BCAHE) union.

About the Department  

Bellevue College has one of the largest interior design programs in the state of Washington. The CIDA-accredited program provides students with a broad foundation in fine arts and design, skill-based practice, and critical thinking experiences. The curriculum offers rigorous and varied methods of design investigation, including exposure to a variety of interior project types and relevant design problems. Our program currently enrolls over 300 students, historically graduating an average of 30 to 50 students per year. The program attracts students with diverse cultural and academic backgrounds, with half of our students employed while they are enrolled, and many returning students who are preparing for or reacting to career or life changes. Currently, we have 4 full-time faculty members and many talented adjunct instructors, all with diverse academic backgrounds and practice-based experience, and a dedication to student success.

Essential Functions  
  • Conduct equitable teaching and promote learning excellence in the Interior Design department via grounded or hybrid course delivery.
  • Foster a positive and caring learning community where diversity and pluralism are advanced.
  • Promote creative and critical thinking through a variety of applied and project-based learning methods.
  • Provide verbal and written assessment of student learning outcomes.
  • Establish and maintain weekly office hours to assist students with coursework and classroom-related questions.
  • Review and update assigned courses to ensure currency of information, appropriate pedagogy, and implementation of student learning outcomes that achieve CIDA accreditation standards.
  • Maintain knowledge and skills in teaching, in the interior design discipline, and in cultural versatility.
  • Participate in all required faculty training.
  • Support the college's Pluralism and Diversity initiative and Student Success initiative by integrating related concepts into class activities and departmental programs.
Minimum Qualifications  
  • Baccalaureate degree in interior design, architecture, interior architecture, environmental design, or industrial design from an institution whose accreditation is recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).
  • 3 years of professional experience in interior design, architecture, interior architecture, environmental design, or industrial design.
  • Experience using industry-standard digital design media and emerging communication tools for virtual collaboration and online instruction.
  • Project-based expertise with mid- to large-scale commercial interior design projects, including project briefs, client contact, concept development, schematic design, interior construction details and specifications, interior FF&E selection and specification, visual communication, and design development.
Preferred Qualifications  
  • Graduate degree in interior design, architecture, interior architecture, environmental design, industrial design, or other relevant discipline; preferably from an institution whose accreditation is recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).
  • NCIDQ certification.
  • LEED-AP accreditation.
  • Experience forming an interior design curriculum or courses around environmental, social, and economic design sustainability, and familiarity with industry standard organizations and certifications (e.g. GBC, LFI, LEED, etc.). 
  • Familiarity with CIDA standards, NCIDQ certification, and their relevance to interior design education and practice.
  • Active affiliation with professional and/or academic design organizations.
  • Mastery of digital design media, graphic communication skills and presentation techniques.
  • Expertise using 3D digital and traditional fabrication tools and processes.
  • Experience in mixed-use or residential interior design, in addition to commercial project expertise.
  • Experience in curriculum development and program management in a multi-cultural college setting.
  • Leadership experience in bringing together people of diverse backgrounds in an inclusive and collaborative manner.
