Position Summary  

The Academic Success Center (ASC) is looking for highly motivated tutors with comprehensive subject knowledge and effective interpersonal and communication skills. Primary responsibilities involve tutoring Bellevue College students within the ASC or at a satellite location. Tutors should be proficient in their subject area and be patient, empathetic, and equitable when engaging students. ASC tutors are not instructors and are not responsible for teaching course content or material.

Pay, Benefits & Work Schedule  

Position Salary Range: $19.96/hr. - $26.56/hr.

Work Schedule: Up to 17 hours/week; Must be available during ASC open hours: Monday-Thursday 8am-6pm, Friday 8am-3:30pm, Saturday and Sunday 11am-4pm; No work will be scheduled during quarter breaks; hours will vary on a quarterly basis.

The salary information shown above is a general guideline only. The salary will be determined based on candidate's qualifications and related experience, as well as market and business considerations. Individuals newly hired to Classified position are placed in a salary range based on the WPEA Collective Bargaining Agreement.

We offer comprehensive compensation package with salary and benefits as the main components. Competitive salary is within the Range stated above, and commensurate with qualifications and experience. This position is expected to NOT be eligible for benefits because eligibility is limited only to employees working at least an average of 80 hours in eligible employment for more than 6 consecutive months and at least 8 hours a month. Eligible positions are eligible for certain benefits.

This is a Classified, overtime eligible position and represented by the Washington Public Employee Association of Higher Education (WPEA-HE).

About the Department  

The Academic Success Center (ASC) is committed to providing high-quality tutoring and educational resources for all students enrolled at Bellevue College. The ASC offers drop-in tutoring, individual tutoring appointments, workshops, and resources such as textbooks and calculators for lending. It is the largest student employer on campus and is second in total visits only to the LMC. The goal of the ASC, its tutors, and its labs is to enable students to succeed in their studies and become independent, life-long learners.

Essential Functions  

Provide Tutoring support for students

  • Using your content knowledge and best practices to assist students with questions regarding their coursework
  • Working in-person and online to provide support for students;
  • Monitoring the Microsoft Teams channel to direct students to the proper tutor (as needed)
  • Provide excellent customer service to students and visitors of the Academic Success Center and its labs

Complete required training

  • Participate in CRLA tutor training 
  • Complete HR trainings annually 
  • Complete training specific to your content area as needed in specialized labs

Outreach and special event support

  • Conduct class visits at the request of faculty members
  • Speak to groups coming to the center as part of campus tours
  • Assist with special events within the ASC and labs 

Other duties as assigned.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications  
  • Associate's Degree in any related field. Any combination of relevant education and/or experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis. 
  • Minimum three (3) months of experience/training in the appropriate discipline
  • Overall GPA of 3.2 or above, either currently or in previous education; A, A- or B+ in subject areas you wish to tutor 
  • Approval for each course/subject area you plan to tutor in (Non-students: Need departmental approval via unofficial transcript)
  • Ability to attend and complete training sessions including tutor training sessions, FERPA, Title IX, Hazing, and Ethics training 
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, PowerPoint)
  • Effective written, verbal, interpersonal, and communication skills with multicultural populations and to facilitate equitable learning 
  • Commitment to tutor at least three consecutive quarters
  • Demonstrated experience working with diverse colleagues and/or students in a collaborative and inclusive environment 
  • Patience and empathy for students' individual learning styles 
  • Desire to empower students and help them become independent learners
Preferred Qualifications  
  • Previous experience tutoring
  • Experience working with students in higher education.
  • Ability to commit to working with the ASC for one year.
