Your Role: The Produce Lead will oversee the day-to-day operations in the produce department, ensuring the produce product is stocked and presented in a clean and appealing manner while assisting and advising customers regarding the produce.  The Produce Lead will be responsible for ensuring all safety and sanitation guidelines and regulations are adhered to.

 

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Stocking the produce products in a clean, safe, and appealing manner.
  • Preparing fruit and vegetable trays for sale.
  • Follows USDA and Michigan Department of Agriculture rules, regulations, and standards for the Produce department.
  • Rotates product to ensure freshness.
  • Assists with unloading deliveries to ensure product is received in good condition and stored properly.
  • Assists customers with produce purchases and advises on availability and preparation of assorted vegetables and fruits.
  • Ensures proper use of scale for correct pricing, weights, and tares.
  • Maintains inventory working with Deli/Produce Supervisor to select inventory, including types and quantities appropriate for changes in retail activity.
  • Develops and maintains good working relationships with external inspectors and purveyors.
  • Maintains records of produce inventory, spoilage, write-offs, and other operational data.
  • Provides customer service by processing requests accurately in a courteous and pleasant manner.
  • Ensure equipment, work surfaces, display cases, refrigerators, and freezers are cleaned properly with safe temperatures always maintained and ready for internal or external inspections at any time.
  • Follows all safety standards and regulations, including ServSafe and portion control standards.
  • May assist in the deli and meat department as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • High school degree or GED combined with a minimum of six months experience in food preparation and handling.
  • Knowledge of produce varieties, preparation of produce and seasons of produce.
  • Knowledge of food retail marketing practices.
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Planning skills.
  • Inventory management experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with inspectors and vendors.
  • SERV Safe certification.
  • Basic math skills are necessary.
  • Must be able to read and apply company procedure documents.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills are necessary to greet customers and provide information in an accurate and courteous manner.
  • Must be able to work in a team environment.
  • Must be able to handle multiple tasks accurately and courteously.
  • Must be able to complete company-sponsored training and required updates within specified training periods.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to lift fifty (50) pounds throughout a normal shift, moving and stacking merchandise, cleaning, sweeping, shoveling snow.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods.
  • Ability to work in commercial refrigerators and freezers for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to operate microwaves, small ovens, scales, and other cooking equipment.
  • Ability to read and apply procedures, recipes, and other operating instructions.
  • Ability to safely handle all necessary cutting tools.
  • Ability to stoop, bend, and stand for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to work inside coolers to maintain inventory.
  • Ability to ascend and descend a five-foot step ladder safely.
