Job Description:

The Assistant Director for Outdoor Leadership and Student Activities is responsible for the vision, direction, risk management and full oversight of the Brown Outdoor Leadership Training (BOLT) program, a signature, legacy experiential leadership initiative for sophomores. The Assistant Director designs, develops, implements, and assesses leadership training curriculum for leaders of student organizations focusing on core competencies such as ethical decision making, equity and inclusivity, risk management, and event management.  The Assistant Director advises, supports, and advocates for student organizations and contributes to University efforts to create an environment that supports and encourages student initiative and leadership development consistent with Brown's mission and the principles of Liberal Learning at Brown and provides educational and developmental advising for approximately 50 student organizations.

Job Qualifications 

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree and 3 to 5 years of experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience required. 

  • Ability to manage wilderness-based programs required. 

  • Event planning or program development experience required.

  • Some personal or professional wilderness (backpacking) experience required.  

  • Leave No Trace (LNT), Wilderness First Aid, Wilderness First Responder, and CPR training preferred.

Job Competencies

  • Working knowledge of principles, practices and theories of student leadership and development; understanding of the cultural, social and educational needs of students developing in leadership roles.

  • Demonstrated success working in a diverse environment with a critical understanding of social justice issues. Demonstrated experience developing systems and structures that center justice and equity.

  • Demonstrated ability to creatively and efficiently solve problems, using sound judgment, assuming ownership of a problem, and resolving challenges in a collaborative manner. 

  • Demonstrated organizational skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in writing and orally.

  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends as required.

  • Agility and familiarity with latest software, database systems, computer literacy.

  • Strong commitment to supporting the University's goal of cultivating a diverse and inclusive community.
