About the Opportunity:

Brown University is undergoing a tremendous growth in the arts, with newly appointed leadership for the Brown Arts Institute, and the state of the art, one of a kind Lindemann Performing Arts Center scheduled to open in Fall 2023. Brown seeks to fulfill its ambitious vision for the arts as an integral presence throughout a liberal arts education. We believe the arts are fundamental to critical inquiry into the most important questions facing humanity around the world, and we support artists operating at the highest levels of their craft to inform, and be informed by, scholars in disciplines across the sciences, social sciences, and humanities.

Responsibilities:

The Technical Coordinator provides ongoing support for all technical needs of the Brown Arts Institute's programs across venues, to include audio, video, conferencing, lighting, and focused IT systems. The Technical Coordinator monitors and troubleshoots the sophisticated audio/visual systems of Granoff Center for the Creative Arts and Lindemann Performing Arts Center, in support of the courses, performances, special events, installations/exhibits, and research sponsored or supported by the BAI.   Evening and weekend work is required, as many of the BAI's programs take place outside of the standard work week. The position has physical requirements, including regular use of ladders and lifts, and physical labor to include lifting heavy objects. 

Qualifications

  • Required: BA
  • Preferred: BA in technical theater or related field
  • 3-5 years in technical theater management, stage management, or performance art-related field
  • Broad skill-set including experience in audio, video, lighting, and signal routing
  • Demonstrated competencies in professional artistic practice to appropriately communicate with a wide array of creative professionals (including faculty, visiting artists, etc.)
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Ability to prioritize and multitask
  • Safety Focused
  • Proven verbal and written communication skills and a flexible style to successfully accommodate a broad range of individuals and developing priorities.
  • Experience in installation and fabrication a plus
  • Demonstrated ability to support a community of diverse perspectives and cultures in an inclusive environment

The Technical Coordinator will be mainly responsible for the academic technical needs of two large facilities with eight major production spaces, several smaller, non-traditional spaces, plus an art gallery. The ideal candidate should display a fluency in operating audio/visual systems, including lighting boards. He or she should be able to anticipate challenges, troubleshoot, and problem solve diplomatically. The Technical Coordinator will need to adapt with the changing needs of the BAI, stay meticulously organized, and work well with others.
