Job Description Summary:

The Assistant Store Manager supports the Store Manager in daily operations and oversees store activities in their absence. This role is responsible for providing exceptional service to customers, coaching store staff, and maintaining a safe, cost-effective, and profitable business unit. Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist the Store Manager in overseeing store operations, including hiring, supervision, and working with staff to complete daily tasks and maintain high standards.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to stand and/or walk for up to 8 hours.
  • Lift and/or carry up to 30 pounds from ground to overhead for up to 30 minutes during a shift.
  • Occasionally lift and/or carry up to 60 pounds from ground to waist level.
  • Push/pull with arms up to a force of 20 pounds.
  • Bend at the waist with occasional twisting for up to one hour per shift.
  • Grasp, reach, and manipulate objects with hands, requiring eye-hand coordination and potentially climbing a ladder to store and retrieve materials or place and remove signs.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

This position includes, but is not limited to, the following essential job duties, responsibilities, and requirements:

Customer Satisfaction: Provides and coaches store staff to deliver excellent customer service in a courteous, friendly, and attentive manner.

  • Welcomes customers as they enter and expresses gratitude as they leave; offers assistance and suggests or recommends products and services.
  • Ensures prompt and courteous customer service, professionally resolving customer concerns. Accurately processes all sales on cash registers, handling various forms of payment for products sold.
  • Operates multi-function equipment such as fuel consoles, lottery machines, money order machines, and telecom transactions.
  • Addresses or assists in addressing routine customer concerns within established guidelines.
  • Reports to work punctually and adheres to the dress and appearance code.

Facility Condition: Maintains awareness of the overall store facility's condition; informs the Store Manager of any equipment failure or maintenance/supply needs; and performs or directs store staff to perform general housekeeping duties including:

  • Sweeping, mopping, or cleaning floors.
  • Dusting and/or washing windows, counters, displays, store areas, and restrooms.
  • Disposing of trash, litter, or debris.
  • Maintaining and checking equipment such as coffee machines, beverage dispensers, refrigeration units, and other machines, tools, and work aids.

Merchandising: Monitors and ensures that product areas are stocked, rotated, and displayed to maintain freshness, appeal, and easy customer access.

  • Prepares or assists in preparing product inventory orders.
  • Adjusts prices in accordance with Company and/or brand guidelines; places advertising and pricing signage inside and outside the facility, including marquees, ceilings, walls, and windows.

Sales Controls: Ensures all shift sales are completed following Company policies by entering and coaching store employees to enter all transactions accurately and promptly at the correct price using the correct keys/codes, placing all payments collected in the register, and making correct change.

Financial Controls:

  • Maintains accurate records of cash, sales, payroll, and inventory, and accounts for any discrepancies.
  • Handles daily bookkeeping, invoicing, and gasoline data, and completes daily banking tasks.
  • Ensures timely processing of weekly time and attendance records and payroll while addressing any issues.
  • Reports any sales, cash, inventory, or operating discrepancies to the Store Manager.
  • Adheres to Company and/or brand guidelines for product breakage or spoilage.

Staffing Controls:

  • Supports the Store Manager in overseeing employee activities and providing shift supervision when necessary.
  • Schedules employees in alignment with Company guidelines and business requirements to ensure customer satisfaction and a positive store image.
  • Develops and reinforces team members' skills in accordance with Company and/or brand operating, conduct, and performance standards.
  • Assists with employee performance management, including providing feedback for improvement and contributing to performance reviews.
  • Implements equitable management practices in hiring, training, counseling, mentoring, motivating, and separating employees.

Security Controls:

  • Collaborates with the Store Manager to maintain a safe environment for employees and customers and to protect Company assets, such as information, cash, product, equipment, and property.
  • Reports any incidents or potential situations involving employee or customer injury, theft, property damage, improper sanitation, or waste disposal to the Store Manager.
  • Alerts the Store Manager of any circumstances where unsafe, unlawful, or unethical conduct may be occurring.

Administrative Controls:

  • Contributes to the preparation of periodic sales, product, and operating reports as directed by the Store Manager.
  • Attends job-related meetings and adapts to irregular work hours as needed.
  • Assists in managing merchandise, cash shortages, and other selling expenses.
  • Helps maintain appropriate inventory levels and conducts shift audits.
  • Carries out duties associated with shift changes, including cash drawer counting and completion of shift reports.
  • Consistently attends work as scheduled and performs all duties with minimal supervision.
  • Completes daily store reports and additional tasks as assigned by the Store Manager.

Job Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent, with 6 months to 1 year of retail and management experience preferred.
  • Understanding of basic business and customer service principles, including planning, organizing, resource management, and leadership.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to convey information clearly and effectively.
  • Problem-solving capabilities and the ability to address unexpected challenges using established procedures.
  • Punctuality and the ability to work as scheduled.
  • Proficiency in operating various equipment, including cash registers, scanners, and beverage dispensers.
  • Ability to perform essential duties listed above.
  • Capability to work in the physical and work conditions described below.
  • Valid driver's license and dependable transportation.
  • Flexibility to work opposite shifts of the Store Manager and have open availability.

Physical Requirements:

  • Occasional exposure to temperature extremes in walk-in coolers/freezers and outdoors.
  • Ability to lift and/or carry up to 30 pounds from ground to overhead (e.g., stocking/maintaining inventory) and up to 50 pounds from ground to waist (e.g., replenishing fountain syrups).
  • Manual dexterity for grasping, reaching, and manipulating objects.
  • Ability to push/pull with arms up to a force of 20 pounds (e.g., using a hand truck).
  • Capability to perform tasks that require bending, twisting, stooping, kneeling, squatting, and overhead reaching.
  • Effective oral communication skills.
  • Proficiency in operating a cash register and/or computer keyboard.
  • Ability to work independently and in collaboration with others.
  • Tolerance for occasional noise exposure.
  • Capacity to stand and/or walk for an entire shift and climb ladders as needed.

Work Environment:

The work environment characteristics outlined below represent those typically encountered by employees while performing the essential functions of this role. Performing approximately 95% of tasks indoors, with occasional outdoor duties such as cleaning parking lots, maintaining gas pumps, and handling waste disposal. Occasional exposure to extreme cold temperatures while working in walk-in coolers and/or freezers. Periodic exposure to noise levels common in a busy work setting. Ability to work with a degree of autonomy and periodic supervision.
