Job Description

The Senior Academic Advisor will co-supervise the Academic Advisors and provide direct supervision of the unit's administrative professional staff, hourly & student employees, as well as serve as a resource lead for the advisors and be a liaison between Academic Advising Leadership and the WC Academic Advisors/Team.

This position reports directly to the West Charleston Manager of Advising. Provides assistance in critical areas such as new advisor training & development, degree requirement modifications, CSN High School, and other dual enrollment programs. Lead communication with department Chairs and Faculty concerning updates within their respective programs that are necessary for successful advising practices, provide quality assurance checks of Academic Advisor appointment notes, records, and other communications required by Academic Advisors. The Senior Academic Advisor will be responsible for compiling, organizing, and reporting weekly/monthly data metrics utilizing set parameters to the advising leadership team/ AVP, and responsible for monitoring/arranging Advisor appointment schedules. The incumbent will also work with Academic Advisors to assist them with fully implementing caseload management, best practices, and proactive advising/coaching strategies.

Additional duties to include:

  • Assisting with hiring/evaluation of departmental staff and actively participating in department events and collegewide committees

  • Show an ability to have an analytical and thoughtful approach to problem solving and data driven resolutions/initiatives

  • Map out a balanced schedule of classes for students and making sure they have met the required prerequisites

  • Direct advisement services to CSN High School, NV Promise and dual & concurrent enrolled students/staff

  • Be intentional about creating an affirming and inclusive space for the diverse student population we serve

  • Complete and/or help students file appropriate paperwork (i.e., appeals, reinstatement, etc.)

  • Display a grasp of student engagement and retention focused advising services & programs

  • Exhibit emotional intelligence, effective decision-making and strong judgement skills

  • Demonstrate servant leadership, empathy and awareness others and their needs

  • Conduct individual advising appointments, as needed

  • Be flexible, punctual and forward thinking

  • Complete graduation applications

  • Evaluate transfer process

The ideal candidate will possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Kowledge of and sensitivity to disadvantaged students with diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds typical of community college students

  • Knowledge of advising, student development, engagement, retention, and student success best practice and strategies

  • Knowledge of FERPA, including the ability to interpret and adhere to student privacy policies.

  • Ability to develop, implement and present workshops pertaining to college success and advanced learning strategies, effective graduation planning, and transfer agreements

  • Ability to evaluate and assess student's academic needs, strengths, and weaknesses, and with student's input develop an appropriate course of action

  • Ability to provide effective academic, personal, financial, adjustment and career advisement to a diverse college student population.

  • Ability to communicate effectively, lead teams, and serve as a role model for advisors, student workers, and hourly employees.

  • Excellent critical-thinking skills through a demonstrated ability to interpret and evaluate problems of a sensitive and complex nature, analyzing and defining information obtained explicitly and implicitly from students, faculty, and staff

  • Must be approachable, personable, and articulate with excellent writing, interpersonal and public speaking skills, and the ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, faculty, and staff

  • Possess strong problem-solving skills, resourcefulness, and demonstrate the ability as a self-starter to plan and carry out short-term and long-term action plans

  • Proficient in MS Office Suite and computer database management software in general

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university; OR equivalent combination of education and experience

  • 2 years of direct academic advising experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree from an accredited college or university

  • 3 years of direct academic advising experience

  • 1 year experience as a direct supervisor

Salary Information


Administrative Faculty C – The starting salary is $53,805
