The Frederick National Laboratory is a Federally Funded Research and Development Center (FFRDC) sponsored by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and operated by Leidos Biomedical Research, Inc.  The lab addresses some of the most urgent and intractable problems in the biomedical sciences in cancer and AIDS, drug development and first-in-human clinical trials, applications of nanotechnology in medicine, and rapid response to emerging threats of infectious diseases.

 Position Overview:

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION  

The Frederick National Laboratory is dedicated to improving human health through the discovery and innovation in the biomedical sciences, focusing on cancer, AIDS, and emerging infectious diseases. 

The Biomedical Informatics and Data Science (BIDS) directorate works collaboratively and helps to fulfill the mission of Frederick National Laboratory in the areas of biomedical informatics and data science by developing and applying world leading data science and computing technologies to basic and applied biomedical research challenges, supporting critical operations, developing and delivering national data resources, and employing leading-edge software and data science to effectively enable and advance clinical translation.  

The Strategic and Data Sciences Initiatives (SDSI) group in BIDS works collaboratively to accelerate cancer research with a focus on building effective use of innovative data and scalable computing and guiding development of future computational infrastructure and workforce capabilities needed to address key cancer research challenges including predicting treatment outcome, addressing bias in data and applications, and shortening the time it takes for new treatments to be developed. The groups efforts leverage some of the largest computers in the world and advanced techniques like machine learning and artificial intelligence to create insights that can be applied at local cancer treatment centers to improve quality of life and improved outcomes for all cancer patients. A key focus of this group is to provide secure and robust data management and data modeling platforms and services for scientific data in accordance with FAIR data principles (Findability, Accessibility, Interoperability, and Reusability) supporting an increasing depth of scientific insight for the ever-expanding collection of scientific datasets.  

KEY ROLES/RESPONSIBILITIES    

This position supports the NCI-DOE Capability Transfer effort where the successful candidate will be working as part of a dynamic team to provide advanced data science support to NCI-DOE collaborations and related SDSI scientific and technical initiatives. Specific responsibilities include: 

  • Transfer and use of advanced and large-scale  high performance computing platforms and cutting-edge machine learning/artificial intelligence algorithms/models on cancer biology challenges at the cellular, molecular and population levels 
  • Analyze bioinformatics data using machine learning techniques, computational methods, and cloud resources to analyze drug interactions, natural language processing, molecular dynamics simulations, and image processing for translating R&D to practical applications 
  • Be an integral team member of the NCI-DOE Capability Transfer team, suggesting new ideas and procedures to improve processes
  • Contribute to the testing, integration, and deployment of the resources, using agreed upon standards and tools 
  • Contribute material and expertise to training initiatives across the program to educate the public in using NCI-DOE collaboration developed artificial intelligence/machine learning resources
  • Define and implement data science workflows for High Performance Computing and Cloud systems, integrating with the Precision Oncology Model and Data Clearinghouse (MoDaC), Github and other resources 
  • Work collaboratively with other SDSI and BIDS group members to identify opportunities for use of new advanced computational approaches in cancer research
  •  Other duties as assigned

BASIC QUALIFICAIONS 

To be considered for this position, you must minimally meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below: 

  • Possession of Bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university according to the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) in Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Computer Science or a related field or four (4) years relevant experience in lieu of degree.  Foreign degrees must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency
  • In addition to the education requirement, a minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience
  • experience in bioinformatics, computational biology, etc. 
  • Experience in the design, development and testing of software in a production environment 
  • Experience in the juncture between biology and computer science with a firm understanding of various biological data types 
  • Proficient in Linux and programming skills (shell scripting, Python, Java, R, Perl, C/C++) for scripting automation and debugging and testing of existing software 
  • Experience with web UI libraries and frameworks (JQuery, Ajax) 
  • Experience with Source Control systems (e.g. Github, SVN) and data interchange formats (JSON, XML) 
  • Experience with debugging, performance profiling, and optimization 
  • Excellent organizational/time management skills and strong communication skills (oral and written) 
  • Ability to work independently to achieve the desired outcome with limited direction 
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS 

Candidates with these desired skills will be given preferential consideration:

  • Possession of a Master's degree in a relevant field 
  • Experienced in Machine Learning (ML) and Natural Language Processing (NLP) 
  • Experience with big data and metadata management systems 
  • Experience with Cloud object storage technologies (Amazon S3, Google Cloud, Azure) 
  • Experience with RESTful web services 
  • Experience with use, creation, and maintenance of databases (RDBMS, Graph, etc.) 
  • Knowledge of scientific workflows 
  • Experience with continuous integration tools e.g., Jenkins, Travis
