Tooling Engineer II

FLSA
Exempt

Position Summary 
The Tooling Engineer will represent the business unit in all technical aspects of the tool product/process design and validation with emphasis on manufacturability and time to market. The engineer will work closely with product development teams and manufacturing in designing & sourcing molds, working with external vendors, and investigating and improving existing molds with an emphasis on product manufacturing and cost reduction. The engineer must identify & implement cost reduction initiatives and must actively participate in improvements and redesign of existing tooling/molding processes.  The engineer will gain exposure to some of the complex tasks within the job function and occasionally be directed in several aspects of the work.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
•    Completes intermediate projects with guidance from more experienced engineers and managers. 
•    Manage tool design, fabrication, process development, and validation of injection molds
•    Write capital expenditure requests for equipment and molds, and manage the budget for molding projects
•    Coordinate and communicate assigned projects with the appropriate personnel and departments
•    Utilize experience in plastic part design, processing, and mold making to provide technical direction for tool room personnel, process engineering, product engineering and external vendors
•    Conduct design reviews of new molds integrating product & process engineering, the material supplier, tool vendor and hot runner manufacturer
•    Implement quality improvement programs in the Business Unit as it relates to molding
•    Provide responsive support (both short-term and long-term) to the molding production line to ensure the quality products on-time
•    Conducts independent analysis and develops solutions to problems. 
•    Develops approaches and designs where precedent usually exists. 
•    Performs developmental and/or test work that relies heavily on a comprehensive knowledge of theory and design.   
•    Writes detailed design specifications.
•    Receives general project direction. Solicits input from more experienced engineers.
•    Assists in training new/current employees with respect to documentation, use of equipment, laboratory techniques and department procedures.
•    Delivers communications tailored to the needs of the receiver (managers, peers, customers) with appropriate frequency to maximize its utility and promote cross-functional collaboration.
•    Work on special projects as they arise

Knowledge & Skills
•    Excellent verbal and written communication skills
•    Strong knowledge of plastic part design for manufacturability, and plastic processing
•    Knowledge of polymer behavior
•    Knowledge and experience with cold and hot runner high cavitation tools
•    Knowledge of mold manufacturing processes and their capabilities
•    Proficient in CAD, Solidworks or similar
•    Experience in project management, process validation, and process improvement
•    Strong skills in project scheduling
•    Demonstrate problem analysis skills and provide solutions
•    Proficient with the use of Design for Manufacturing, SPC, DOE and Six Sigma techniques 
•    Working knowledge of quality improvement, lean manufacturing methods, statistical process controls, and process capability
•    Review and understand tool & product drawings, tolerance stack up, understanding molding processing documents, data collection and analysis and development of standard work instructions
•    Scientific molding/RJG molding knowledge/training 
•    Mold Simulation experience is highly desired 
•    Mold Instrumentation experience and knowledge preferred  
•    Silicone Molding experience and knowledge preferred  
•    Six Sigma certification and/or training
•    Competent in your domain.  Familiar with other areas of domain expertise within the team.
•    Has a basic understanding of best practices. Has a basic to intermediate understanding of engineering discipline
•    Have awareness of the broader product strategy and contribute to it
•    Ability to receive general project direction and solicit input from more experienced engineers.
•    Requires the ability to independently make decisions that impact the attainment of project objectives.

Minimum Qualifications, Education & Experience 
•    Must be at least 18 years of age
•    Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university (Mechanical)
•    2-4 years' experience in Medical Device and Molding Tools

Work Environment
•    This is largely a sedentary role. 
•    This job operates in a professional office environment and routinely uses standard office equipment.
•    Work may be performed in a clean room environment
•    While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to sit or stand for long periods of time; depending on the machine they are operating
•    Must be able to occasionally move and lift objects of up to 25 lbs
•    Typically requires travel less than 5% of the time
